Donald Ray Cartwright
Donald Ray Cartwright, 85, of Indian Town died on Thursday June 11, 2026 at Sentara Elizabeth City Hospital. He was born to the late Albert Allen Cartwright and Rosa Bateman Cartwright of Grandy N.C.
As a young man Don aspired to enter the family business – Cartwright Barbershop of Grandy, NC. Don ended up not only learning the trade, but becoming the first professionally licensed barber in North Carolina. Under Don’s leadership Cartwright’s Barbershop became the first officially licensed barbershop in the state. He managed the business for over 60 years as a licensed Master Barber. Though Don enjoyed his many years serving the community- first and foremost: he loved God and family.
Donald Cartwright is survived by his wife, Ruth of the Shawboro, NC home; and two sons, Gerald and Todd. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren and extended family members, friends, neighbors and of course his countless former and current barbershop customers. In lieu of flowers, please enjoy each day and live it to the fullest. Per Don’s request he will be cremated and no memorial services are planned. Please share expressions of sympathy for the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.

Our deepest sympathy in the families loss.
A good man. We loved his stories. He was great with my son when he was a little boy when we’d go in for cuts… “I don’t have any suckers but you can have my pack of nabs!” 🤍 I’m very sorry to hear this news and will keep his family in our thoughts. Rest easy, Mr. Don.
So sorry to hear of Don’s passing. Prayers for the family.
My condolences to the family. May God wrap his loving arms around each of you and give you comfort during this difficult time.
Take your rest my friend. I will miss renewing your Barbers License next year but I will always remember the great conversations about crazy socks we had. My condolences to the family.
I give my condolences to all of his family. Had many conversations with Don , he had a lot of good stories . He will be missed.
