Pamela A. Lucas

Pamela Ann (Vokt) Lucas, 73, of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on August 8, 2026. Pam was born in Atlantic, Iowa, on February 19, 1953, to Bob and Jean (Cron) Vokt. She graduated from Atlantic High School and later studied at Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing in Council Bluffs, Iowa. After six months at Jennie Edmundson, Pam moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where she learned venipuncture at Omaha Blood Plasma and worked for two and a half years.

From there, Pam headed west, spending six months in Phoenix before moving to Tucson, Arizona, where she worked as a phlebotomist at Tucson General Hospital for five years and forged many enduring friendships. In 1979, she drove her notorious 1957 Chevy “Green Machine” truck to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. While working at the Safeway deli in Steamboat, she met her future husband, Luke Lucas. Pam and Luke moved to Nags Head, North Carolina, in 1981 and married on February 12, 1983.

Pam and Luke welcomed two daughters, Jessica in November 1983 and Valerie in September 1986. During this time, Luke built the family home in Southern Shores, which soon filled with love, guests, beloved pets, and happy houseplants.

In 1992, Pam began her long career at Kitty Hawk Elementary School, first in the cafeteria and later as a teacher’s assistant in first- and second-grade classrooms for two decades. Everywhere she went, someone who knew and loved “Mrs. Lucas” would run up for a hug or stop for a chat. Even after retirement, Pam kept busy—continuing to cater with The Kitchen Witch and taking a part-time role at Duck General Store, where she delighted in writing silly puns on the whiteboard.

Pam had an encyclopedic knowledge of plants and a green thumb to match. Her abundant vegetable garden spoiled her family, while her vibrant flowers delighted pollinators. She was a phenomenal cook and a near-limitless wellspring of energy. Pam’s artwork adorns many homes—fish prints, stained glass, and, of course, photographs. If you could catch her sitting down, you would likely find her on the bird porch, watching the year-round hummingbirds and catching up on the phone with friends and family, or in her rocker with a book in hand.

In recent years, Pam traveled with family to France, Prague, Lithuania, and Hawaii. She also made international treks with friends, including trips to Italy and Canada, and joined Jessica and her husband, Michal, for adventures in Iceland and Copenhagen. Throughout her life, Pam delighted in visiting familiar and new places with the many lifelong friends she made across the country.

Pam had a gift for noticing the things others might pass by. She rarely encountered a beautiful sunset, a flower in bloom, a bird or bug, or even an interesting door without stopping to take a photograph. Through her camera, she captured the world as she saw it: full of small wonders worth noticing and sharing.

She brought that same attentiveness to the people in her life. Pam never forgot a birthday or anniversary, faithfully sending cards to remind the people she loved that she was thinking of them. She delighted in small acts of kindness, often finding exactly the right thing to brighten someone’s day. Only now, through the stories friends are sharing, is her family beginning to understand the full reach of that kindness.

Pam is survived by her husband of 43 years, Luke; her daughter, Jessica, and her husband, Michal; her daughter, Valerie; and her brother, Roger. She is also survived by many beloved sisters- and brothers-in-law, as well as adored nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her parents and her brother, Michael, preceded her in death.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Pam’s life on September 5, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. at a private soundfront home in Kill Devil Hills.
