The first crematory in Dare County history has begun operations at a new facility in East Lake on the Dare County mainland. CAPITAL CREMATORY a subsidiary of Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. of Nags Head is the first business of its kind in county history and will provide convenient crematory service to the funeral homes of the immediate area and eastern North Carolina. The crematory will feature a US manufactured, state-of-the art, fully automated, propane-powered retort with an in-house morgue, and business office. The crematory will add 6 high skill, high-tech jobs to the local economy and will operate on-demand for area funeral service professionals.

State-wide and nationally, cremation demand is projected to rise dramatically as part of sweeping trend that favors the affordability, convenience, and environmental advantages of cremation over traditional casket burial. By 2025, the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) predicts the national cremation rate to exceed 50 percent. Currently, the cremation rate in North Carolina is over 30 percent and the Dare-Currituck cremation rate is nearing 50 percent.

The demand for local cremation services are overdue and growing quickly stated Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. president and founder, Courtney N. Gallop.

Any county with a local crematory facility is at a distinct infrastructure advantage over communities with no such services readily available.

Gallop explained that funeral homes with convenient access to a crematory are better able to control prices and keep cremation affordable for the families they serve. Capital Crematory will be the newest and most modern facility in eastern North Carolina and we are extremely excited to bring the technology to Dare County which is know for being on the vanguard of issues affecting its citizens, said Gallop.

The new crematory and its operators will be under regulatory oversight from the North Carolina Board of Funeral Service in Raleigh which is responsible for establishing and enforcing rules and regulations for crematories, funeral homes, and funeral directors. Gallop adds that construction of the facility was permitted with a standard building permit working with General Contractor Ben Andrews who insisted on using mostly local contractors and laborers whenever possible.
