Francis P. Toolan

Francis “Frank”  Patrick Toolan of Southern Shores, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home August 9, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend who brought a smile, song, and willingness to lend a hand to anyone he met.

Frank was born and raised in New York City, the seventh of eight children of Michael and Annie (Gordon) Toolan (both deceased). In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his seven brothers and sisters, and his granddaughter, Caitlin Marie. After his service in the United States Navy, he met Patricia K. Grace to whom he was married to for 70 years. Frank began his career as a splicer for New York Telephone, and through hard work and a passion for learning, his 35 year professional career culminated as an executive at AT&T in New Jersey. In parallel with his professional career, Frank earned his undergraduate degree from New York University, and both his Masters and Doctorate of Education Administration from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Throughout his life, Frank was always known to help a neighbor, volunteer in his community, and always be the rock of his family. He was excellent with career and life advice, taught math and social studies, and served on several boards. He was deeply devoted to his volunteering at the Lyons VA Medical Center in New Jersey, and the New Jersey and North Carolina Special Olympics. Always proud of his Irish heritage, he was a founding member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for Somerset County, New Jersey.

A devout Catholic, Frank was very active in his local churches as a cantor, choir member, and Eucharistic Minister – most recently at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, NC. He was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. Frank was also a gifted athlete, coach, and avid golfer. He was an active member of the Duck Woods Country Club and a frequent medal winner in the Senior Olympics. He was also a great lover of music and dancing. He never sat down at any dance, and was frequently asked to sing at any family gathering and other events.

Frank was a devoted family man, sharing his support, advice, and love to his large family through both big and small ways.. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Patricia K. Toolan of the Southern Shores home and their four children: Fran Toolan and wife Catherine of Newburyport, MA, Mary Beth Fanelli and husband Robert of Harbinger, NC, Chris Toolan and partner Maslin Seal of Southern Shores, NC and Matt Toolan and wife Edie of Needham, MA as well as 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of extended family members and treasured friends.

Frank’s memorial mass will be held at Holy Redeemer in Kitty Hawk, NC August 21, 2026, at 11 a.m. Father John Hanley will be the celebrant. All who knew Frank are welcome to attend. immediately following the mass;  the committal rite will be held graveside at Southern Shores Cemetery.  Friends are invited to greet the family at Duck Woods Country Club after the committal. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests that donations be made in Frank’s memory to Disabled American Veterans.
