William Norman Newbern, Jr.

Powells Point – William Norman Newbern Jr., 78, of Powells Point, NC, passed away at his home on the Saturday, July 8, 2017.  Norman Jr. was predeceased by his parents, William Norman Newbern Sr. and Verdie Barrow Newbern of Powells Point, his son, William Norman Newbern lll of Harbinger, and his brother, Roy Philip Newbern also of Powells Point, NC.

Norman Jr., met his wife of 58 years, Dora, at Louisburg College in 1959. A life long resident of Currituck County, Norman Jr. served as county Sheriff for 24 years until his retirement. At the time he took office in 1970, he was the youngest person ever elected  County Sheriff in the State of North Carolina.  He devoted much of his time taking care of his family and being “Pop Pop” to his grandkids as well as to other children who loved him.

Norman Jr. is survived by his wife; Dora B. Newbern, of the home; son, Jeffrey Newbern Sr. of Harbinger; sister, Janice (Charles) Haskett of Elizabeth City; sister, Fannie Newbern; sister, Sarah Anne Griffin (Lucian, deceased); brother, Lindley Gray Newbern, (Diane), brother,  Tommy (Sandra) Newbern all of Powells Point; grandchildren Jeffrey A. Newbern Jr. (Alice)  of Harbinger, Robyn Patterson (Shane) of Kitty Hawk, Danielle Guthrie (Lee) of Harbinger, Jacob Newbern of Harbinger,  Ryan Newbern (Meggan) of Harbinger, Bryan Newbern of Harbinger, Ashley Credle (Johnny) of Jarvisburg, and Haley Newbern of Harbinger . Also surviving are eleven great-grandchildren, Camden, Gabriella, Holly, Addison, Chandler, Noah, Ainsley, Tarren, Olivia, Summer, and Kyler.

The family will receive friends at the Gallop Funeral Services Chapel in Barco Tuesday, July 11, 2017 from 6-8 pm.  The funeral service will be held at 11am, Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at the Hebron Methodist Church in Jarvisburg, NC. The interment and committal will follow at the Newbern Family Cemetery. The Reverend Dawne Hollis-Custer will officiate and the Rev. Floyd Hoskinson will be the eulogist.
