November 27, 2008

Southern Shores-Tobey Piercy Milne born 10/10/39, of Southern Shores, North Carolina, died at home on Thanksgiving Day November 27, after a reoccurrence of  breast cancer. She was lovingly attended by her immediate family. Other family members and many friends were part of her ‘transition team’. She is survived by her husband of 48 years Robert Milne, her sons Michael and Andrew, daughter in law Jalila, granddaughter Alexa, and brother Gordon C. Piercy and his family.

A graduate of Duke University, Tobey, taught elementary school in North Carolina and worked in California before moving for two years with her family to Kenya. She received her master’s degree from Catholic University in Social Work and held positions at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, and at United Way in Northern Virginia. While living in Reston, Virginia, Tobey was an adjunct professor at George Mason University, teaching graduate social work. She was a licensed psychotherapist in private practice in northern Virginia for over twenty years and in North Carolina over the last decade. She was active in establishing the first FISH organization and black history program in Reston, Virginia.

After retiring to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Tobey provided Resonance Repatterning to individuals, couples, and women’s groups. Tobey served on the Boards of League of Women’s Voters and the Southern Shores Community Association and as a long term volunteer at the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, NC.  She provided leadership in the formation of the OBX Grassroots for Obama, in establishing the first office for a Presidential candidate on the Outer Banks. Tobey danced at the Obama victory party at Kelly’s! She is loved by many and shall be forgotten by none. The family will hold a private memorial at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial tributes in Tobey’s name be made to the American Cancer Society, (“Dare County Relay for Life” PO Box 1422, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949), or “Best Friends Animal Society”,  5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah 84741-5000.
