Thomas Clayton Long, Sr.

Knotts Island- Thomas Clayton Long, Sr. or “Tommy” as he was best known, died Monday, May 27, 2019 at his home. Tommy was 89.  He was predeceased by his wife Ann Long; his son, Tommy Long, Jr.; his parents, Clayton and Marcelline Long; and his brother, John A. Long.

Tommy was born in Philadelphia, PA and spent the majority of his childhood on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.  He attended high school in Eastville, VA while working hard on the family farm. At the suggestion of his little brother, Tommy found work in the local Colonial Stores supermarket.  Tommy excelled and remained with the company for over fifty years even as it transitioned to the A+P and finally to Pantry Pride. After retiring from the grocery business, Tommy retired to Knotts Island where he passed the time working for a local barbeque restaurant.

Thomas Long, Sr. is survived by his baby brother, Paul J. Long of Lucama, NC; one niece; three nephews, and his loyal friend and caregiver, Stephanie Gwaltney-Smith (Jimmy) also of Knotts Island.

The family will honor Tommy wishes for cremation and no memorial services are planned at this time. Condolences to the family may be expressed via the online register at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.
