Sheila Gaskins Crowe
Avon – Sheila Gaskins Crowe, 74, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 20, 2026.
Born on May 24, 1951, in Buxton, North Carolina, Sheila spent much of her childhood moving throughout the East Coast as part of a Coast Guard family before her family eventually settled in Chesapeake, Virginia, where she graduated from high school.
She later continued that life of service and adventure as an Army wife and mother, creating a warm and welcoming home wherever military life carried them before settling back on Hatteras Island in 1999, where she spent the last 27 years surrounded by the community she loved.
For most of her adult life, Sheila worked in the real estate industry and formed many treasured friendships along the way. She was also an active member of St. John United Methodist Church serving on various committees including Finance, Staff and Parish Relations. Sheila was an integral part of St. John’s Community Dinners ministry. Without fail, she helped organize, prepare, and serve well over 15,000 meals during the past 13 years. Known for her kindness, grace, caring spirit, and timeless sense of style and class, she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband, Ron; her daughter, Carrie Meekins-Dilworth (Don); her son, Ryan Meekins (Tiffany); and her stepdaughter, Tina Anderson (Troy). She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Liam, Ruby, Jack, Gavin, Owen, Thomas, Taylor, and Trenton; as well as her aunt and lifelong friend, Cheryl Gray McDonald (Allen). In addition, she leaves behind many cherished in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, Warren Gaskins, Sr. and Elizabeth “Libby” Gray Gaskins; her brother, Warren Gaskins, Jr.; and her sister-in-law, Denise Gaskins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, PO Box 129, Avon, NC 27915.
A celebration of Sheila’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall.

I was so honored to have worked with Sheila at OBR for 19 years and call her my friend. We became fast friends and I can't express how much I will miss our calls and seeing her when we visit each year. She will remain in my heart forever. My condolences to Ron and all of the family.
Sheila was my first and one of my best friends when I moved her 25 years ago. We remained lunch buddies even through our retirement years. She was a steadying hand for this northerner trying to fit in. She will be missed by everyone and especially me.

To Ron & the family - God bless and carry you all during this very sad time. Had many laughs & wonderful conversations with my dear friend Sheila. She was loved immensely & will be missed terribly. One of the things I loved most about her was her honestly & not being afraid to speak her mind. We all have that one certain friend & she was that one to me - I could confide in her about anything & know it would stay there. Until we meet again. Don't tell my Mama about any of our conversations.

Sheila was an amazing person and had a good influence on me growing up. My life was richer and more full because of her. Sheila was kind, giving of herself and good natured. She had many friends and I will miss her. My deepest sympathy to Ron, Carrie, Ryan, Tina and Sheila's beloved grandsons.
I am in total shock that Sheila has passed! She was like my sister and now I won’t ever be able to chat with her. My sincere condolences and thoughts and prayers go out to the family. She will always be remembered and in our hearts!!
My condolences go out to all of Sheila’s family and dearest friends. Sheila and I were roommates one summer at Chowan College. I went home with her to Chesapeake one weekend and met her mom and dad. We kept in touch off and on over the years mostly through Christmas cards. Several times over the years my husband and I met her for lunch when we visited The Outer Banks area. She was such a sweet and gracious friend and I know will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
