Ronald Jack Abernethy

Kill Devil Hills – Ronald Jack Abernethy, 91, passed away peacefully at home on January 24, 2024 with family by his side. Jack was born in Lincoln County NC to Clyde and Willie Abernethy on May 1, 1932. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Corinne Abernethy. PopPop also leaves behind their daughter Lesa McKay and son Brad Abernethy (Elaine); three grandchildren Kyle McKay, Casey Abernethy (Christian), and Caitlin Abernethy; and his sister Elaine Baker.
Jack was a proud Korean War veteran in the U.S. Army and carried a heightened sense of patriotism throughout his life. After returning from Korea, he worked as a surveyor for Duke Power Co. and later joined the Federal Bureau of Prisons from which he retired in 1982. In 1992 Jack and Corinne moved to Kill Devil Hills NC where he pursued his dream to fish commercially. He became known as Capt. Jack as he gillnetted the Albemarle Sound aboard the Fish Hawk until retiring again after 20 years on the water. Jack spent his remaining years as a gifted storyteller reminiscing to his family, friends, pets, or anyone willing to sit awhile. He enjoyed recounting his experiences so much that he wrote a memoir of his own life just in case someone would be interested.
Friends and family may gather to view at the Gallop Funeral Chapel in Nags Head on January 31, 2024 from 6pm to 8pm. The graveside service with military honors will be held February 1, 2024 at The Town of Manteo Cemetery at 10am. Reverend Spottswood Graves will officiate.
A special thank you to Amy, Diana, and Dale for your caring support and the Colington Fire Department for always being there whenever needed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Colington Fire Department or Outer Banks Presbyterian Church.
Please share an expression of comfort with the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.
