Roger D. Pfendler
Roger D. Pfendler, 67 years old, of Kill Devil Hills, NC passed away on February 21, 2023 at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City after a long struggle with chronic renal disease. He was predeceased by his father, Norman Pfendler; and mother, Stella Mosicki.
Roger leaves behind his wife, Catherine; brother, Norman; son, Jason Szewczyk (Upstate NY); stepdaughters, Sarah Metott, Karen Sehn (Upstate NY), Karalyn Stutz (Colorado), and stepson Frank Crawford, III (Upstate NY).
Roger grew up in Boonville, NY. He met his wife Cathy while they both were working at Oneida Healthcare Center. They married in 1984 and resided in Camden, NY until 2000 when they moved to Kill Devil Hills, NC. He worked as part of the original nursing crew that opened the Outer Banks Hospital in 2002 until his retirement from active nursing in 2014.
Even after retirement, he continued education through conferences and community activities always seeking knowledge and was a wealth of information. Roger remained active in the community serving on the bicycle-pedestrian safety coalition, the OBRA ham radio club, the North Carolina Nurses Association, GEM volunteer, various fundraising events and was active in his neighborhood with the Landing Lot Association.
Roger loved cooking, grilling and sharing culinary achievements with his co-workers and friends. Roger was a loving and giving person and continued to give as an organ and tissue donor upon his passing. He was often regarded as tough on the exterior but was kind and soft in the heart.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no formal services. Family and neighbors gathered on Thursday at The Landing, where Roger loved to fish and socialize. Memorial contributions can be made to any of the associations above. Please share condolences with the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.

Cathy, OMG. Moe Robinson just texted me with the news and then Effie just sent me the Facebook post. Moe said he had been sick. I have always felt bad we didn't stay better in touch but I thought of u guys often and had hoped to get down there one day.He was my best bud in Oneida, always able to sense when something was up with me, giving support. I can still remember the night he called to tell me Dale had died. It was just another crash for Dale, I figured. I think I went out to feed the chickens and then off to work. I was sitting in the nursing office, alone, when he called, "Did u hear about Dale?" I was speakless. Now Roger is gone 3 days after him but years later. I can't believe u guys were married 38 years, seems like yesterday. That picture is great. Cathy, I am soooo sorry for your loss. I will keep u in my prayers.
