Richard Eugene Gantt
Richard Eugene Gantt “Dickie” of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina died Sunday, July 9, 2023 after a short battle with cancer. He was 72 years young. Dickie was preceded in death by his parents Esley Eugene Gantt and Kathleen Harris Gantt, his daughter Kathleen Gray “Katie” Gantt, and recently his brother and best friend, Thomas Ezell “Tommy” Gantt.
Dickie moved to the Outer Banks in July 1973 to be closer to his grandfather, Thomas Jefferson “Jep” Harris with whom he enjoyed a mutual love of fishing. Once here, he worked with Rad Tillett as a carpenter. In working with Rad, he found what he loved to do, which became his lifelong career.
Dickie had a warm and loving heart which he showed caring for his mother in the last years of her life. Dickie also cherished his family including aunts, uncles, sisters, brother, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and close friends.
Dickie is survived by one daughter, Paige Sillies (Steve) of Southern Shores; two sisters, Sandra Callis (David) of Colerain, NC and Karen Gray (Walter) of Kitty Hawk; four grandchildren, Greysen, Myles, Lydia, and Vance; and nieces and nephews galore. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Jane.
A graveside funeral will be held at 3pm on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk, NC. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the family home in Kitty Hawk after the funeral. Please share condolences with the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. My husband, Burt, and I were so lucky to get to know Dickie in1998, when he helped Rad Tillett renovate "Aries," our house in Southern Shores. We ran into him many times over the years, always happier for seeing him, and loved getting to know him even better when he helped Bob Sykes with an addition to "Aries" in 2016. Dickie was a terrific guy! His smile and sense of humor were infectious. God bless you, Dickie. Be at peace.
We're so sorry to hear about Dickie. What a great guy! I loved spending time with him at the Cavalier. He was nothing short of interesting. He taught me to hang doors, was very patient, kept me laughing. I'll miss you Dickie. Give Ms. Kat & Tommy big loves for me!
It's been many years Cousin Dick but your passing makes it seem much too short. Memories of many fun times in Kingsport and Rock Hill will be treasured by me forever.
