  6. Very sorry about Grayson’s passing. My condolences to his family and friends. He was a great guy. I worked with Grayson on base when he was in the CG (I was civilian). We talked some over the years, not enough, and I would see him on the ferry occasionally. I also worked with his sister Faith at KFC long ago. I will miss not being to talk to Grayson anytime soon. Rest easy, friend.

    I didn’t know either … only meeting your dad once in our years at the division… but”Oley Hooper” well I heard his name a lot being the training coordinator in HR…and know he was one they didn’t like seeing retire!!

Oley Grayson Hooper

Oley Grayson Hooper, 73, died unexpectedly in Edgecombe County NC June 8, 2023.  “Grayson” as he was best known, was born in Dare County October 7, 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Grayson served his country honorably in the Unites States Coast Guard. He also worked for the North Carolina Ferry Division in Hatteras, retiring after 38 years of service.

Left to cherish Grayson’s memory is his wife, Janice Willis Hooper; one daughter, Jennifer Avery (Pete); one son, James Edward “Jamie” Hooper; five grandchildren, Alex Quidley, Grayson Hill, Nova Hooper, Rocco Cuomo and Russell Cuomo; one step-daughter, Sallie Gene Simmons (Nick); his sister, Faith Broughton (Jeff) and numerous other relatives, extended family members, and close friends.

The funeral will be held at St. John Methodist Church in Avon, NC on Monday, June 12, 2023 at 2 pm. Burial will immediately follow at Kinnakeet North End Cemetery. Pastor Gina Miller will officiate. Donations in Grayson’s memory may be made to St. John Methodist Church.
