Nancy Caldwell Johnson
Wanchese – Nancy Caldwell Johnson, 76, entered the Gates of Heaven on Tuesday, September 8th, 2015, after a brief illness. Nancy had several siblings, along with her parents that preceded her in death. Her husband Arthur, passed away in May.
She was born in Rocky Gap, West Virginia July 19th, 1939, to the late Frank and Gladys Caldwell. She later moved to Norfolk, Virginia in her teen years. At age 21, Nancy married and relocated to Skyco, after a whirlwind courtship with the love of her life. There, she and Arthur started their own family.
Nancy always loved to work outside and was an avid gardener. She loved to fish and enjoyed making crafts and also sewing. She collected antiques, and she loved to restore furniture. One of her greatest passions was cooking and one of her favorite things to bake was banana bread. She was affectionately known as “The Banana Bread Lady” to many in the area. She also worked outside the home in various locations throughout the county such as the Coastland Times for many years and Oregon Inlet Fishing Center.
Nancy was well respected in the community, and a member of various organizations throughout the years. She was very outgoing, but more than anything, family always came first. Nancy’s home was always open and throughout the years, she and Arthur hosted various family members. No matter the circumstances, the home was always filled to the brim with love.
She leaves behind her daughter, Susan J. Payne, and grandchildren Adam and Katie Payne, all of Manteo NC and daughter Lisa Fulmer, of Grandy, NC. She is survived by her siblings, Joey Caldwell & family of WV, Mary Causer & family of Norfolk, VA, Toby Caldwell & family of Monticello, IN, Virgie Fraser & family of Monticello, IN. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson of Manteo NC, whose husband Harry is deceased. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members in California, Missouri, North Carolina, West Virginia and Indiana.
Nancy will be missed more than words can say. She was a beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Friend.

A Memorial Service will be held at Gallop Funeral Home Monday September 28 at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends after the service at their home in Skyco.
