Lorraine Perry
Powells Point- Mrs. Lorena B. “Lorraine” Perry or “Cousin Baby Sis” as most everyone knew her, entered into eternal rest Sunday September 3, 2017 at Sentara Nursing Center in Barco, NC. She recently turned 96 years old and was predeceased by her husband, former Currituck County official Clarence Perry. Lorraine was the daughter of the late Kelly Jones and Lorena Patterson Jones.
Lorraine was born in Coinjock, NC in 1921. She was educated in the historic Currituck County Colored School system. She went on to meet her life-long love, Clarence who she married in 1941. The two settled in Manhattan, New York where they raised two sons. In New York, Baby Sis also worked for years as a clerk with the Young & Rubicam advertising firm. In the late 1970’s Clarence and Lorraine returned to her beloved Harbinger, NC. Baby Sis supported her husband’s county responsibilities while she became an active and devoted volunteer at the Currituck County Senior Center. What she loved most however was serving her church- Piney Grove Church of Christ Disciples of Christ Church in Powells Point, which her grandmother founded. Over the years at Piney Grove, Baby Sis held many positions including Mother, Lead Usher, Trustee, and Custodian. She will be remembered as the faithful member who could be counted on for everything. In recent years, Baby Sis was a fixture in the local community, enjoying numerous celebrations, events, and gatherings around Currituck County.
Left behind are Lorraine’s two sons, James Perry (Marguerite) of Florida; Ronald Jones, of NY,NY; two grandchildren, Athena Ross (Kenneth), and William Perry (Sarah) all of Florida; five grandchildren, Tami, Maya, James, Elise, and Melody. Also surviving, are Lorraine’s five nieces, Delores Thompson of South Carolina, Lucille Haffeny, Marie Tuckett, and Malvine Brockett all of New York, NY, and Francis Sutherland of Arizona; nephew, Thomas Adams of Teaneck, NJ; as well as a host of other relatives and friends, and her Piney Grove Church family.
In lieu of home visits, friends may visit the family, view, and share memories at Piney Grove Church in Powells Point, NC Friday September 8, 2017 from 5 to 8 pm. The funeral will be at 3 pm Saturday, September 9 at Piney Grove Church. Burial in the church cemetery will follow the service. Pastor Sharee Wilder will officiate.
