June Myers Barnes

February 25, 2019

Southern Shores – June Myers Barnes passed away peacefully on the morning of February 25, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.  June was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on June 14, 1929, to the late William C. and Isabel Hope Myers.

June attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, VA where she met the love of her life William Roy Barnes.  They were married in 1947 and moved to New Bern, N.C.  In 1958, they returned to Virginia living in Great Bridge.  A shared love of the Outer Banks brought them permanently to Kitty Hawk in 1980.

Nothing pleased June more than being surrounded by her family.  It was her greatest pride and joy.  She was an avid reader, gardener, and loved cooking for her family.  She also enjoyed attending her Bible study and her (No Hat) ladies’ group.  Her greatest pleasure though was taking care of her grandchildren and even some of her great grandchildren.  She was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist church and volunteered with the beach food pantry.  She worked briefly for the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce and later as an assistant at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church preschool.

June was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, William R. Barnes, and her sister, Gloria Ross.  June is survived by her three children, Barbara Sherman (Rick), Myers Barnes (Lorena), and Scott Barnes.  She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Greg Sherman, Allison Brown, Hunter Barnes, Tyler Harrison, and Caroline Barnes, as well as eight great grandchildren.  To her family and many friends, June was known as “Nan.”  Everyone loved Nan!

The family extends a very special thank you to the loving care givers of Beth Shalom Village Home in Virginia Beach, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations may be made to Dare Challenge or the Dare County Food Pantry.

A memorial service will be held at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church with Pastors Jim Thompson and Colin Snider officiating, on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at 11am.

Condolences may be express via the online register at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop funeral Services. Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.
