Judith Arlene Picard

February 27, 2011

Judith Arlene Picard passed away on Sunday evening, February 27, 2011 at home, surrounded by her family. She was 68 years old, a feisty cancer survivor who won two out of three times.

Judy was born in Freeport, New York in 1944, to Alma Furlong and John Gebert Sr. She was preceded in death by brother Robert “Bobby” Gebert, and leaves behind brother John Gebert Jr. and his wife Nancy, and a sister, Patricia Paulsen, and their families.

Judy later moved to Florida where she raised three children on her own, entered the workforce, completed a Bachelors in Sociology, and a Master’s in Education, at the University of North Florida in the space of five years. Education would become a life long part of her life, as when she obtained tenure as a professor in the fields of database management at the University of New Mexico where she retired.

Judy loved computing, genealogy, and Irish/Celtic history. She loved to sing and dance, and had a passion for life that kept her dreaming, reaching, and achieving all her life. The family is deeply grateful for the extensive genealogical history prepared by Judy in her later years, much of her work can be viewed still at www.best-spot.com/Gebert/ and so much more is available by request.

Judy leaves behind a beloved daughter, Toni Parker, son-in-law Andy Parker, and two young grandchildren, Tia and Thomas. She is survived by Toni’s brother Donald Picard, whom she raised as a son. Preceding her in death in death was Toni’s brother Thomas Picard Jr, also raised as her son.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date. They ask in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Interfaith Community Outreach via PO Box 838, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949, in appreciation for their providing of free key medical equipment to keep Judy in her home. Condolences to the family may be expressed via the on-line register at www.gallopfuneralservices.com.
