Joseph B. Duke, Jr.

Joseph Boyd Duke Jr., 71, of Kill Devil Hills, went to be with the Lord on June 27, 2024. Joe was born in Portsmouth, VA February 19, 1953 to the late Joseph Duke, Sr. and Frances Duke. Joe was a devoted husband to his wife, Paula Duke who predeceased him in 2019.
Joe was hard working and dedicated. He and Paula founded Coastal Cab company located on the Outer Banks. They grew the company for over 20 years which eventually became Coastal Transportation. Joe was known for his great business mind and kind heart. Despite his many responsibilities, Joe always found time for his friends and family. He also served his community for a number of years as a volunteer firefighter in Colington Harbour.
Though Joe may not have liked being the center of attention, he deserves to have his long years of dedication to his family and friends honored. He was a man of integrity, kindness, and generosity. Joe left a lasting impact on all that knew him.
Left to cherish Joe’s memory is his son, Joseph Duke, III (Christina) of Phoenix, AZ; his step-daughter, Christine Vaughan (Carl) of Chesapeake, VA; two grandchildren, Ryan and Jordan; his sister, Dianne Sanders (Robert) of Hillsboro, OH; two nieces, Rebekah and Teresa; and his nephew, Rob. Joe is also survived by his loyal friend, caregiver, and business partner, Mary Daniels of Kitty Hawk, NC.
Joe’s funeral will be held at Gallop Memorial Chapel in Barco, NC Friday July 5, 2024 at 11 AM. Friends and family may view one hour prior. The interment and committal will be held Friday July 5, 2024 at 2;30 pm at Riverside Cemetery in Norfolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s honor to the Dare County Animal Shelter. Share a fond memory of Joe or an expression of sympathy at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Joe was a wonderful husband to my sister. He was a wonderful brother in law, a great friend and traveling buddy. We will miss him.
We are so sorry to hear about Joe. He was an amazing neighbor and friend for 20 years. We loved talking to him about all his adventures with his cab company. I know Paula was waiting for him with open arms. Rest in peace dear friend ❤️
I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I worked with him at the hotel and was very fond of him. He had a huge heart and was so nice. He will be missed.
Cousin Joey, I cherish all our memories together, and all our conversations. Knowing you have gone to be with the Lord gives me the greatest comfort. Love always, Cousin Deborah
My heart goes out to the family. I've known Joey and the family almost all my life. He was a sweet soul, just like his parents. I'm sending his family and friend's my thoughts and prayers. Right now I'm just in shock.
Jesus made our separation from Joe temporary. I look forward to seeing you on the other side dear friend.
I enjoyed the times we were together as children playing in granny's yard.
I agree with the words in his obituary, Joe "was a man of integrity, kindness, and generosity" - we enjoyed working with him at the Town of Nags Head when he came in to take care of his taxicab business - Rest In Peace Joe.
We have lost a dear, good friend in Joe. His smile, goodness and humor will be missed by all of those who knew and loved him.
I am so sorry to hear about Joe’s passing. I had just been to visit him a few days before. I am glad I got to spend that last time with him.
I meet Joe and Paula through my father when they decided to open the cab company. Joe was always had a smile and a joke loaded and ready to go whenever he saw you. He was always fair and was a good mentor to me and a family friend. Will miss the stories he told about being a Peace Officer and Fire Fighter. Don't make them like Joe anymore. The world is a duller place without him and Paula. Hope they are back together now enjoying a good laugh..Love and miss you.
