Condolences
Nina, I just learned about Jon and am deeply saddened. Jon was one of my earliest graduate students at Cornell and losing a graduate student is like loosing a child. We spent many good and productive decades together at IES and at Mirror Lake. Phyllis typed his Ph D. thesis! His brilliance as a scientist and his sharp wit and clear insights will be missed by many. Sending sincere condolences for this loss. Gene
Dear Jon's family, Though I know there are no words that can effectively ease the pain of a loss like Jon's I wish to express my thoughts are with you, his family and friends and reaffirm my admiration for a wonderful human being. Rodolfo
Nina, Jon was a brilliant human - in both his science and in his zest for life and adventure. I learned so much from his wisdom and have been inspired by his example. He treated everyone with respect and interest. He will be sorely missed.
Dear Nina, I was so sorry to hear about Jon's passing and send you my deepest sympathies. I always enjoyed discussions with both of you at Cary Conferences and ESA meetings. Jon was always upbeat and full of good ideas. I am very sorry for your loss. --Monica
Dear Nina, Jon's loss has made me so sad. He has been a cheerful creative science colleague since 1973 when we worked together on the Fort River in Stuart Fisher's lab. Later he was 'Dr. Carbon' of the Cascade project for some 25 years, a brilliant contributor of research ideas and a favorite mentor to our students. I deeply miss our email banter. I am so sorry for your loss. ~ Steve
Nina, Mary Anne and I send condolences. We will miss Jon and remember all the fun times we had with you and him. Two come to mind now: a chaotic dinner with the baby twins at your house and Nick's famous and inexplicable comment at the ND hospital, "smells like owls". Jon often repeated that one to me. It always got a laugh.
Dear Nina, I was so sorry to learn of Jon's death. He was (and in my mind, still is) a wonderful person. I thoroughly enjoyed my interactions with him as part of the larger Likens group. Nancy joins me in wishing you the very best during these difficult times. with very best regards, Jim
Nina, I am so saddened to hear of Jon's passing. He was such a terrific scientist and inspiration, plus he knew how to live well. I always admired the stories of the two of you wind surfing or parasailing (or whatever the extreme water sports you enjoyed were). I'm so sorry for your loss; I send my condolences - and virtual hug to you at this difficult time. Nancy

Dear Nina, Please accept my sincere condolences. I didn't know Jon all that well, even though he gave me a memorable tour of the Jewish section of Prague one day that I never forgot. He was an oustanding scientist and will be missed. Kind regards, Jill Baron
Dear Nina, I was sadden to hear of Jon’s passing, please accept my sincere condolences. I always enjoyed my interactions with Jon whether it be science based, construction projects or dogs. He was a good man and fun to be around and will be missed.
Nina, Jon was one of the biggest influences in my professional life, and (like you) always very thoughtful, kind and generous to me as I learned to ply the trade. Just a great guy, and a lot of fun too. I am very sorry, and you are in Lucile's and my thoughts. Cliff
Nina I am sad to hear of Jon’s passing. He was a great guy and a brilliant and accomplished scientist. I always appreciated his perspective and sense of humor. We were classmates at Cornell. He left us too soon. Best Charley
Nina, Great memories of being with you and Jon through the years. Excellent scientist, mentor and person. Thinking of you. Pete
Dear Nina, I have such wonderful memories of both Jon and you from my days as a graduate student at Hubbard Brook in the mid-1980s. You were both so kind and happy and generous with your time that it made me feel welcome. I also remember how obvious your love for one another was. I'm grateful to have known Jon and to have learned from him in those formative years.
Nina and Cary community, I am so sorry to hear of Jons' passing. I have so many fond (and funny) memories of Jon - from memorable meals at your house to Jon's take on egg sandwich protocol. But I also appreciated his approach to science, and gentle but forthright way of offering advice as I considered graduate school, and beyond. My deepest condolences.
Jon made my life richer. Condolences to Nina and all other family members.
Nina - so sorry for your loss. Jon was a great influence on me. He had a knack for using numbers to build logical arguments and interesting stories. I appreciated that he was always approachable, didn't take himself too seriously and had an offbeat sense of humor.
