John William Hicks

November 5, 2024

Currituck – John William Hicks, 88, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024 at home with his two most constant companions at his side; Sandy, the love of his life for the past 33 years, and their amazing dog, Louie.

John was born in Garrett, Indiana to Charles E Hicks and Marie Violet Ruby Hicks.  He spent most of his young life in Baltimore with his parents and getting into mischief with his brothers, Howard and Steve.  John loved to talk about those days on Silver Hill Avenue and constantly commented on the amazing strength of his mom to raise three “spirited” boys.

He spent many years in Romney WV, raising a family and working for Western Union.  His job next took him to Germany where he lived for ten years and met Sandy.  He and Sandy spent many years travelling around Europe, making friends and good memories.  Volksmarching became their favorite pastime.

The last years were spent on Bells Island in North Carolina.  A beautiful spot on the Currituck sound where they enjoyed community life as well as sitting quietly on the back porch watching the sun rise and set over the water.

John is survived by partner, love and best friend, Sandra Ruter; his first wife Patricia Ricker; three children William K Hicks, Elizabeth Grimes, and Deborah Bell; grandchildren Patricia Catlett, James T Bell, Katherine Hicks; great grandchildren Rhett Catlett and Carter Catlett; brothers Howard Hicks and Steve Hicks; nieces and nephews Bill Hicks, Cheryl Hicks, Steven Hicks, Jennifer Hicks and Tim Hicks.

John was predeceased by his parents, Charles Hicks and Marie Hicks.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (https://curethekids.org/) in memory of his grandson, Jonathan David Hicks. Please leave a message of hope at gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.
