John D. Hardie

Southern Shores-  John D. Hardie of Southern Shores passed away in Nags Head January 23, 2016.  John or Jake as most friends and family knew him, was 86.  Jake was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio.  He was the son of the late Wallace G and Frances J. Hardie.  Jake was also predeceased by his two daughters Christina Lynn Hardie and Allyson Frances Hardie.

Jake Hardie served his country bravely in the Korean War in the United States Army.  After completing his  military service, he embarked on a long and successful career in the insurance business.  He eventually started his own agency- John Hardie Insurers of Columbus, Ohio.  While his business flourished, Jake served as Lodge Master of the York Masonic Lodge in Columbus and was an active Shriner with the Aladdin Shriners for a number of years.

Following his retirement, John and Sally fulfilled their dream and moved to the Outer Banks where they enjoyed the beach life together.  Jake also took great pleasure in his Friday Lunch Club meetings and volunteering as a gardener with the Elizabethan Gardens.  Sally and Jake were also members of the Southern Shores Boat Club and Duck Woods Country Club.

John D. Hardie is survived by his wife of 64 years Sally of the Southern Shores residence; his daughter Suzanne Hardie Hammond (Mitchell) of Seneca, South Carolina; two grandchildren, Rachel Magalotti of Hackensack, New Jersey, and Jacob Hammond (Michelle) of Seneca, SC;  one great-grandchild, Cayley Hammond also of Seneca, SC and other extended family members and friends.

A viewing was held at Gallop Funeral Services in Nags Head, NC Tuesday January 26, 2016 from 4 pm to 6 pm.  John will be laid to rest at Union Cemetery of Columbus, OH at a graveside funeral service Friday January 29, 2016 at 1 pm with full Masonic rites and military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests that memorial tributes in Jake’s honor be forwarded to The Shriners Hospital For Children.
