JoAnne Norris Junkin

JoAnne Norris Junkin, 73, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, passed away peacefully at home on August 3, 2024. Born on December 25, 1950, in Raleigh, NC, JoAnne’s life was a rich tapestry of love, service, and unwavering devotion.
JoAnne was a dedicated Navy wife who moved all over the country with her husband, Joe Wade Junkin, and their three children for over two decades of military service. Her commitment to her family and country was matched by her dedication to her work as a defense contractor, from which she retired in 2013. She and Joe then moved to their dream beach home in Kill Devil Hills, NC to live out their retirement by the water and open their home as a vacation destination to their family for summers, Thanksgivings, Christmases, and fun weekends at J&J’s Beach Shack.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Joe Wade Junkin; her daughter, Candace Junkin; and her parents, Marie and Nello Norris. JoAnne is survived by her daughter, Kimberly (Charles) Rosenfield; her son, Christopher (Karen) Junkin; her son-in-law, Benjamin McKay; sister Patricia (Richard) Paschall; and brother Douglas (Jane) Norris. She leaves behind a cherished legacy of nine grandchildren—Ashli (Sean) Regan, Sarah (Courtney) Ziolkowski, Tori Junkin, William Knight, Wade Junkin, Zachary Rosenfield, Paula McKay, Laura McKay, and Gabrielle McKay—as well as a great-grandson, Connor Regan.
JoAnne will be dearly missed by her partner, Terry Moore, and a village of loving friends and extended family. Her home was always a place where everyone felt welcome, well-fed, and part of a loving family. A devoted Christian, JoAnne exemplified Christ’s love through her generosity and care for others. She had a deep love for animals, often rescuing dogs and cats and showering them with affection. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she loved planning all year to create magical memories for her children and grandchildren, who loved celebrating her birthday with her at the same time. JoAnne always made sure her family knew they were loved. She was known to send cards or gifts for any occasion, often filled with confetti, just to make them smile.
JoAnne’s legacy of love, generosity, and hospitality will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be remembered fondly and deeply missed.
A memorial service to celebrate JoAnne’s remarkable life will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest with Joe at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her honor to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation to help find a cure or your local ASPCA to help animals find loving homes. Please share condolences with the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.

Joanne and I were friends from elementary school through high school graduation. We reconnected through Facebook several years ago and we both attended our 50th high school reunion where we caught up with each other. Her smiling shiny eyes were just as bright as ever. I know she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Rest in peace with Joe and Candy now JoAnne!
Prayers for Joann’s family and Terry who lost a companion, friend and love of his life. Her presence and smile will always be missed. We are still lost for words with this unexpected loss of a friend. God Bless.
Heartbroken by this news. I am so sorry for your loss. Grandma Jo was an angel here on earth
This describes my sister perfectly. She has endured so much over especially the last several years but she always did so with a smile and such a beautiful attitude.I miss her so much already but I know where she is and I'll join her someday.
So sad to hear about JoAnne’s passing. I worked with her in SoMD for many years. She’d always had that smile which always brightened up my day when I came into work.Even more so coming back from a grueling road trip. Condolences to her family and friends.
I miss my funny, loving, generous sister-in-law, who died much too soon for me. JoAnne welcomed me into the family when Pat and I were dating. We visited Joe and JoAnne from coast to coast, as the Navy took them across America, and the Air Force moved us around. We walked together for Parkinson's around National baseball park, visited them at Kill Devil Hills, had fun with JoAnne and friend Terry, and relished being a part of her life. We will reunite at the throne of our Savior. See you soon, dear sister.
Our thoughts and prayers to JoAnne’s family and to her “partner in crime” of the last few years, Terry Moore. We had a great time getting to know her as our neighbor at Bethpage Campground. We enjoyed those Saturday morning coffee and conversations- she was truly a special person: RIP JoAnne
I never met JoAnne but I knew her parents well. We went to the same church-Trinity Baptist in Raleigh. I started talking to JoAnne when I found out whose daughter she was. I just heard from Carol Ann Farmer who told me about JoAnne's passing. Prayers for all of you. What a shock. She had to be a wonderful person.
I'm so sorry to hear of JoAnne's passing. I have cherished memories of her walking my brother Steve and me to the Five and Dime near MomMom's house in Raleigh to buy pennywhistles. She was such a fun and loving older cousin! My prayers and condolences go out to her family as they mourn her loss and celebrate her legacy.
So very sorry for the loss of a funny lady with lotsa love!!
