Herman Orvelo Thorpe

Powells Point- Herman Orvelo Thorpe died at home with family by his side January 9, 2012. Herman was born in Welch, West Virginia January 16, 1920. He was the son of the late E.E. Thorpe and Carrie Thorpe, and was predeceased by a son and a daughter.

Herman was a faithful Christian and very actively involved in his church in Northern Virginia. Following brave service in WW II, in the United States Army, Herman was employed with Sears in sales for many years. Herman loved wood working and was a self-taught artist. He was also an avid fisherman and visited the outer banks for years before he and his wife of 69 years, Carrie, relocated to Currituck and became members of Powells Point Baptist Church.

Surviving Herman is his wife Carrie Thorpe of the Powells Point residence; a daughter Carolyn Barclay of Kill Devil Hills; two grand-children Patrick Barclay and Christin Pfeifer (Eric); three great-grandchildren Chandler Barclay, Dakota Goldsmith, and Brodie Pfeifer and several cherished extended family members and friends.

Calling hours will be held at the Gallop Funeral Services Chapel MP 16 in Nags Head Thursday January 12, 2012 from 6 pm to 8 pm.  The funeral will be graveside at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon, Virginia Saturday January 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM. The Reverend Sean Roberts will officiate.
