Geraldine S. Turner
Mary Geraldine Sabean Turner, 96, passed away peacefully in her home on October 24, 2024, surrounded by her immediate family and beloved pets.
Born on December 1, 1927, in Weymouth Mills, Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada to Celeste Comeau Sabean and Elias Benjamin Sabean, she was the third daughter of twelve children.
Geraldine completed nursing school in Canada before coming to Chanute Airforce Base in Champaign County, Illinois, to work as a nurse during the Korean War. There she met and was subsequently employed as an au-pair by a family with whom she moved to the Middleburg, Virginia area.
She met Charles Green Turner, Jr. at a function at the Fauquier Springs Country Club near Warrenton, Virginia. They were married on April 25, 1958, and made their first home together on Cork Street, in Winchester, Virginia, before ultimately settling in The Plains.
Geraldine was very active in her community and particularly in her church life at Grace Episcopal Church, The Plains, where she headed the women’s group, sang in the choir, served on the altar guild, and chaired the Piedmont Regional Art Show for many years. She served as President of the Warrenton Antiquarian Society and was active in several local garden clubs.
She is survived by her daughter Lisa, son Charles, four siblings, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in her memory to Hospice of the Piedmont at hopva.org/donate. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com.
Condolences
Gigi was such an inspiration to me. When I first met her in my role as Sabbatical Priest at Grace, we immediately bonded over her experience as a nurse from Nova Scotia, a story shared by my own grandmother for whom I am named. May Gigi rest in peace and rise in glory!
Lisa and Thumper, condolences from Connecticut, we are very sorry for your loss, losing a parent is hard, I imagine losing both parents is even harder. You are both in our prayers.
To Lisa and Charles (Thumper) My sincere condolences for the loss of your mom. Although we are sisters, I did not grow up with your mom, but I do have fond memories of her visits to NS and her stays with me. Your aunt from Digby, Gloria
What an amazing woman. I remember her as such a strong and loving person.
Thumper, Trish & family, My thoughts & prayers are with you at this time. I remember your mother from my childhood at Grace Church & as an adult I always enjoyed my visits & conversations with her. I thought of her as an honorary aunt.
For Thumper, Lisa, and the whole family, I am so sorry for your loss. You were always extended family for me, and I am grateful for my time with Aunt Gerry when I visited The Plains. May her memory be a blessing.
Geraldine was like a mother to me, being there from my earliest memories. She instilled values that I still cherish to this day. I am blessed to have had her as a part of my life and will always have her close to my heart. Her love lives on through her family and flourishes today. God Bless!
Gerri was always a welcoming member of Grace Church and will be missed.
Gerry was a special lady and I miss her.
Gigi was a delight to share time with while visiting both in Virginia and Outer Banks. We both will miss all her family stories 🙏
