Gary Wendell Smith, 82, of Southern Shores, N.C., went to be with his Lord on May 15, 2023, after a two-month illness. Born in Baltimore, Md., on July 10, 1940, to Willard and Pauline Smith, he was a 1958 graduate of Kennard-Dale High School and a 1963 graduate of Army electronics training in El Paso, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sandy Stalcup.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Linda Powell Smith, to whom he was married 59 ½ years, and by a son, Michael B. of Lewisburg, W. Va., and grandchildren Andrew, Madeline, and Alex as well as by a son, James W. “Jimmy” of Suffolk, Va., and his wife, Anna, whom Gary adored, and grandchildren Megan and Hannah.

Retired from civil service, he was an active member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, continuing several weekly jobs he inherited from his father-in-law, Jimmy Powell, in 2002.

A memorial service officiated by Pastor Colin Snider will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, in the sanctuary of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, 803 W.
