Flora Scarborough Wash

Wanchese – Flora Scarborough Wash, 96, of Wanchese, NC passed away peacefully at home December 5, 2013. Flora was born in Duck, NC to the late Joseph and Alpeen Scarborough on June 3, 1917. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence “C.T.” Wash; her son, Kenneth Ray Smith, and her brother, Joseph “Buckshire” Scarborough.

She was raised in Duck and attended Kitty Hawk School. She married Howell Smith of Perry, GA and had 3 children. Flora was employed as a cook for the Whalehead Club in Corolla, NC. During WWII, she worked repairing aircraft in Norfolk, VA where she met and married C.T. Wash. She lived in the Norfolk area much of her adult life. Flora and her husband retired to Florida, spending time in Ft. Lauderdale and settling near Ocala. After the death of her husband, she returned to the Outer Banks to be with her family.

Flora was a wonderful cook, seamstress and crafter who created beautiful Christmas ornaments. Her favorite pastime was reading, which she enjoyed throughout her life.

Flora is survived by her daughters, Judy Cullison of Wanchese and Nancy Scarborough (Stanley) of Skyco; daughter in law Loretta Smith of Gatlinburg, TN; stepson Jim Wash of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren Vicky Daniels (Joey), Tamara Grantham (Randy), Stacey Kimmey, Randall Scarborough, Kristi Ethridge, Kenneth Smith, Jr. (Amy), Tim Scarborough (Brooke), and Emily and Petra Wash. Flora is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren and 5 great- great- grandchildren.

There are no plans for a memorial service at this time. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Tamara and Randy Grantham for their loving long term care of Flora and to Community Home Health and Hospice for their great service.
