Elizabeth Gray Hartmann

Kill Devil Hills – Elizabeth Gray Hartmann passed away peacefully in Kill Devil Hills  July 28, 2017.  “Bette”  as she was lovingly known, was 94. She was the daughter of late George A. Gray and Ellen M. Gray and the wife of the late August J. Hartmann. Bette was born and raised in Kearney, New Jersey.

After completing her nursing studies, Bette joined the United States Army during World War II. She rose quickly through the ranks to become a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps.

Following her military services, Bette met the love of her life- August J. Hartmann and the two went on to raise a family in the Flanders, New Jersey area.  In recent years, Bette relocated to the Outer Banks following the death of her husband, to be closer to family. It was during this time developed a progressive visual impairment.  While she bravely battled the condition she never lost her unique spirit. Bette’s family extends its heartfelt thanks to Dr. John Shepperd  at Virginia Eye Consultants  for his unwavering commitment to her sight and preserving her quality of life.

Surviving Bette are her two daughters, Laura Woodruff of Kill Devil Hills, and Vickie Glover (Brad) of Charlotte, NC;  four grandchildren, Michael Allan, Melissa, Brad , and Jonathan; six great-grandchildren, Chelsea, MacKenna, Dylanie, Kamden, Irelynd, and Devin; as well as a host of other beloved extended family members and her loyal friend, Greg Meade also of Kill Devil Hills.

The family will hold a memorial service back home in New Jersey at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully asks that memorial donations be made to Batten Disease research through
