Donald Eugene Gustafson

April 24, 2021

Donald Eugene Gustafson, 72, of 803 Bermuda Bay Blvd., Kill Devil Hills, NC departed this earthly world for his heavenly home on April 24th, 2021. He died at The Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, North Carolina.

He was born on August 25,1948 in Galesburg, Illinois to Harriett Gustafson. He grew up in Knoxville, Illinois surrounded by loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. His mother later married Francis Hale who became his father, and he had one sister, Christine. Despite developmental and physical challenges, he defied all odds and had a long, impactful life. He had a great faith, loved the Lord and his family. He loved music, especially hymns and gospel. He also loved a good party – especially his birthday which he thought should have been a national holiday for all to celebrate. He loved to dance and to travel. He was a kind and gentle soul with a great sense of humor.

He is survived by his sister, Dr. Christine Petzing (Louis), his niece, Elisa Hedden (Jerrod), his great niece, Brynn Tanner, and his great nephew, Bryan Tanner, as well as many loving cousins and friends. Patricia Ferrante held a special place in his heart as a “sister by another mother.” He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Myrtle and Elmer Gustafson, his mother, Harriett Gustafson Hale, his stepfather, Francis Hale, and his nephew, Spc. Bryan Hale Nelson.

Gallop Funeral Services has been entrusted with the arrangements and he will be cremated. A memorial service will be held on May 2, 2021 at 1 pm at Grace Lutheran Church By The Sea in Nags Head, North Carolina. MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED and seating will be limited.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dare County Home Health and Hospice and/or to Grace Lutheran Church By The Sea. At a later date, Donnie’s remains will be taken to his final resting place beside his beloved mother and stepfather in Knoxville, Illinois where graveside services will be accorded and a celebration of life will be held.
