  1. Dear Dr. and Mrs. Holton:
I’m saddened to hear of Dave’s passing, and I’m sorry to just now be learning of it. Dave became a good friend during my time on the Outer Banks. I loved talking sports with him, as well as the issues of the day. He became a mentor to me, in keeping with his coaching career. I am thankful that our lives intersected. I am a better person because I knew him.

David Quinton Holton, Jr.

September 18, 2013

Manteo- David Quinton Holton, Jr. died with family by his side on September 18th at age 66 in Kill Devil Hills, NC after a courageously fought 10 year battle with cancer. Dave was known for his generous spirit which touched many lives in amazing and unique ways. He had the biggest heart and positive attitude. As one friend said, “We are remembered by how big a wake we leave in our path as we pass by…Dave Holton was a great man…and his wake was long, it was wide and it was deep.”

Born in Edenton, NC on July 7, 1947 to Kathryn Leggett Holton and David Quinton Holton, he attended Edenton High school where he excelled in football, baseball, and basketball. Dave became all-state quarterback of the Edenton Aces and from there his sports career continued well beyond college, ultimately coaching football at Duke University under Coach Mike McGee.

David was also a highly respected business consultant in the Outer Banks. He will forever be remembered for his dedication to family, friends, and community. Dave’s devotion to organizing and aiding charitable project leaves a legacy of personal sacrifice, as he always placed the needs of others in front of his own. When he saw a need Dave was there to fill it which is what inspired his work to establish a local charity, Beyond Pink, as an opportunity to fund additional cancer-related initiatives on the Outer Banks. To quote another friend, “Every once in a while there is someone who passes through our lives ever so briefly, but the impact of the interaction is life long.” Dave was that person for so many.

Survivors include his brother, Dr. Walter L. Holton and wife Barbara of Manteo, NC.; his sister, Francis Holton Maffitt and husband, Jim of Easton, Maryland; his nieces and nephews, Kathryn N. Koonce, Caroline N. Johnson, Susan E. Holton, Kathryn H. Stewart, Andy R. Holton, David B. Holton, and numerous great-nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Dave will be greatly missed by his loving family, his many friends, and acquaintances.

Friends and Family are invited to a Celebration of Life for Dave Holton on October 20, 2013 from 4 PM to 6 PM at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, NC. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to “Beyond Pink”, attn: Jarie Ebert, Outer Banks Hospital, 4800 S. Croatan Hwy, Nags Head, NC 27959 or to a charity of your choice.
