Crawford M. Evans, Jr.
Crawford M. Evans, Jr., 86, of Colington died peacefully at the family home on August 14, 2023. Born August 9, 1937 in Woodleaf, North Carolina, Crawford was the son of the late Crawford M. Evans and the late Mildren Russell Evans. He was predeceased by his daughter, April Louise Evans, and by his brother, Doyle Evans.
Through the seventies, eighties and the nineties, he owned and operated a successful beach variety store known as Skipper’s located across from Avalon Pier. After retirement, he developed his passion for woodworking into creating fine works of art which he displayed and sold at several local art and music festivals throughout the Outer Banks. He participated as a vendor in The Outer Banks Seafood Festival since its inception, Coastal Gardening Festival, The New World Festival of Arts in Manteo, Dare Day, Currituck Arts & Crafts Festival and others.
Besides being a businessman and woodworking artist, Crawford was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and boating, sharing those times with his friends and family. Surviving relatives include his wife, Mary Evans of the Colington Harbor residence; his son, Crawford Monroe “Chip” Evans, III (Megan) of Ocracoke, NC; his two brothers, Richard Evans of Stanfield, NC, and Ronnie Evans (Cathy) of Rock Hill, SC; one sister, Millie Smith (Ronnie) of Fort Lawn, SC; and a host of other family members, in-laws, extended family members, and long-time friends.
The Evans family is honoring Crawford’s directives for cremation. As he preferred, there are no plans for services at this time. The family is respectfully requesting privacy. In lieu of flowers they ask only that everyone perform an act of kindness and neighborliness in Crawford’s honor. Please share sympathies with Mary and the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Mr. Crawford left a huge imprint on me, caugt my first bluemarlin and "gaffer dolphin" with him, picked me and my bestfriend Nate up at joe and kays campground at 430 every morning and gave us a ride, before we even had drivers lisense while on his way to work at OBX FISHING PIER, Mr. Crawford thank you for the great memories ill never forget, godbless. Thinking of you all at this difficult time. Such wonderful memories of them next door to me when Skippers is where Lucky 12 is now. Best one was the day Zachariah walked in sat to say hello guy came in for paper she stole a Reese’s cup and ran out the door when they were distracted. Y’all were family!
My heart goes out to Mary, Chip and family. Crawford was one of the nicest men I have ever met. His laugh was infectious. RIP, my friend.

I just adored Crawford. He was the nicest person. He made three tables and bed steps for me out of his black walnut and they are pure craftsmanship! Will miss seeing you Crawford!

So very sorry to hear of your loss. Its been many years since I have seen him, but my memories are many. If you shopped in Skippers....you were forever his friend. I have one very special memory and that was Crawford fixed dinner for me and all my friends from Newport News up above the store in his home.
