I have known Alvin since 2008.He and his wife Sophia have been close friends for even longer.Alvin was kind, gentle and understanding.He was always funny and had more stories than the local news. The past six months have been very difficult. Even through all this during his last days he remained “Alvin”.His last words to his wife were “I love you “. I guess that statement shows the kind of person he was. Over many months of pain and suffering his message was “I love you “.Rest in peace Alvin “I love you “…..Shan Shan.

  5. Hi Alvin it’s me that 11 year old girl you met in 2008. Well now in Medical school and will always remember how you embraced me as your own. Two months ago when we met in the nursing home we looked at each other and memories flowed without words spoken. I will pray that your new home in heaven will be ready for all your stories love you ….Yunuo

Well buddy you are on your way to a better place.The last months of hospital,nursing home,hospital, nursing homes, is not what you deserve.although our time together was short your stories taught me much. You were funny, serious and at the same time a teacher of life. Your suffering was not what you expected or deserved so finally the Lord said come home. I know you are in a better place telling new stories. I hope you make them laugh in heaven because that’s where you are. Love Ron

  8. I am saddened to hear about Alvin. He was a former co-worker, mentor and exceptional inspector who will be missed. Alvin was always easy going, patient, professional and fair to everyone. He would usually have you smiling or laughing before ending a conversation. I will always value his friendship, code expertise and unique spin on life in general. “Until we meet again”.

  11. I was raised in the White Oak community just down the road from Alvin. He was a fine guy who took great pride in whatever he was doing. Al was known affectionately as “Peepers” in Gates County. I visited him at Lowe’s when he was employed there. I could not have had a more helpful sales representative than Peepers. We also had a very enjoyable visit.
    You lost a really fine man.

I have also help him with projects in Elizabeth City. The inspection community has lost one of the good ones. He will be surely missed. Rest well my friend.

Alvin T. Rountree

October 25, 2024

Alvin Thomas Rountree, 74, of Jarvisburg, NC, passed away on October 25, 2024, with his wife by his side.  He was born in Norfolk, Virginia on November 10, 1949, to the late Thelma Marie Green Rountree and Walter Dallas Rountree. He was also predeceased by his brother, James Dallas Rountree.

Alvin is survived by his wife of 15 years, Yang Fan; his sister-in-law, Rita Rountree; nephew, Aaron Rountree, and cousins, many associates and friends.

Alvin shared stories of growing up in Gates County, his family and hunting as a child.  He worked at the Ford Plant and a grocery store to pay his way through college.  After graduating from college and returning to Gates County he taught high school history for a couple of years then worked as the County building inspector for several years before relocating to the Outer Banks where he worked for many years in various towns as a Building Inspector. He recently retired from the City of Elizabeth City, Building Inspections Department. Alvin loved his work enforcing the NC Building Code and sharing his knowledge of it with others.

A funeral service will be held at Gallop Memorial Chapel in Barco, NC on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, 11:00 AM. Family and friends may view one hour prior to the service. There will be a private burial to follow at Eure Christian Church Cemetery.
