William Carl Schmidt
LCDR, USN (Ret.) William “Bill” C. Schmidt, 85, of Kill Devil Hills, NC passed away Friday, September 30, 2022. Born as a first-generation German/American in Akron, OH on October 10, 1936, he was the son of the late John and Teresia Schmidt.
Bill enlisted in the Navy, at the age of 18, in 1955. He was selected for the Naval Enlisted Scientific Education Program (NESEP) and graduated from Marquette University in 1963, with a BSEE later followed by a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Post Graduate school in Monterey, CA. During the Vietnam War he served on the USS Midway, USS Kitty Hawk and USS Constellation aircraft carriers, as well as a tour of duty as Ship Repair Superintendent in Subic Bay, PI. His last duty being the Special Guidance Projects Manager for the Trident/Polaris Nuclear Submarine Missiles in Washington DC.
Upon retiring from the Navy he moved with his family to Kill Devil Hills, NC in 1977, where he worked at Davis Boat works in Wanchese, NC, becoming a boat-wright and a highly sought-after fine cabinetry woodworker. He also served as the Chairman of the Kill Devil Hills Planning Board from 1984 – 2005.
Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara M. Schmidt and three sons: William Schmidt with his wife Heidi of Wilmington, NC, Paul Schmidt with his wife Dana of Richmond, VA and Stephen Schmidt with his wife Charlotte of Kill Devil Hills, NC. Also surviving are five grandchildren – Kristin Schmidt, Erik Schmidt, Calvin Schmidt, Alexis Schmidt, and Benjamin Schmidt, plus numerous beloved close family and friends.
A private celebration of his life with friends and family be held at a later date.

Barbara and family, I'm so sorry to here of Bill's passing. I have such fond memories of us working at Davis Boatworks. He was a master craftsman with a piece of wood. He will be surely missed.

Bill was a master craftsmen, outstanding carpenter that could have built the Ark. His Love for his wife Barb was a shining example of how to be a husband and father for his family. Bill left an undeniable impression on who ever he met that you were in awe and couldn’t help but Love him. Bill, thank You for passing on your wisdom and kindness. Also thank You for the 20+ years in the NAVY serving and protecting our Country as a Lieutenant Commander.
It was always Barb & Bill. Bill was my brother, not (in-law.) I've known Bill over 62+years. He was the best part of our family! I loved Bill's humor, and his stories (which were many!) Thank you Bill, for being you! I will miss you, and I love you!! Karin (your favorite!)

I'm heartbroken. I've known Bill since I was a child. His humor and stories will always be remembered. He was such a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. I miss him and loved him so much. Our family made many trips to OBX renting Beach Houses having family reunions. Great times with Barb and Bill.
I send deepest sympathy to Mrs. Schmidt and her family. I work at a grocery store in Kill Devil Hills where the Schmidt's were frequent customers. I always enjoyed their visits and how pleasant and loving a couple they were to each other. They were always a bright spot in my day to see them together. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.
Oh my goodness we've been friends forever! ....and had so many good times.....I can't believe I'm writing this. We will miss Bill so much even though we didn't see you guys as much as we should have. The parties, the dinners , the art showers, time spent on the beach and of course sausage making. Barb your in my thoughts and please if there is anything I can of help with just let me know. I'll contact the food bank and please let us know about his celebration of lif

Uncle Bill was always one of my favorite uncles. It was such an honor and joy to know him and have him part of our family. He always had the best stories and patience with how he teaches others. Sending your and our entire family so much love and compassion during this transition. He will be missed dearly.
