Valery Lynn Bass

September 23, 2019

Valery Lynn Bass, 65, of Elizabeth City NC, passed away with her family by her side on  September 23, 2019 after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Valery, a native of Chesapeake, was born to a large family, a baby sister to three older brothers.  A graduate of Deep Creek High School, she excelled in chorus, sang at weddings for family, and loved singing with her church. Valery was employed with Kelly Girl Temp Services providing secretarial support to medical offices, City of Chesapeake, and Volvo Penta.  Three decades of single parenting taught Valery resourcefulness, and the importance of continued learning.  After returning to school for continuing education courses, she started a successful cleaning business, and completed her training for home care aid to the elderly.

Valery loved to laugh, she was resilient and strong, and later in life found she could do nearly anything she set her mind to.  Other than her passion for serving her Lord, her hobbies were reading, sewing, knitting shawls for nursing home residents with her women’s’ group, long walks on the beach, and drives at sunset with the windows down in the cool night air.  She cherished spending time with family, sharing a meal with her sons, visiting with her daughter, and playing with her granddaughters.  Even as her health was waning during her fight with breast cancer, she kept her sense of humor and continued to work on her “good” days.  Most knew Val as a kind, compassionate and youthful spirit, with a contagious smile and a heart of service.

Valery is preceded in death by her parents Hazel Moore and Johnny J. Bass of Chesapeake, and a brother, Daniel Bass (Johnny) of Carrollton.

Valery is survived by her daughter, Amy Harmon (Benjy), sons Aaron Bass and Andrew Bass of Elizabeth City, NC; brothers Kenneth Bass (Kathy), and David Bass ( Mary),  sister in-law Carolyn Bass, many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and two granddaughters (Charlotte and Lane).

The family would like to thank her Oncology doctors and nurses, Community Hospice for going above and beyond, and a special thanks to Mary for your gentleness and compassion for our mother. Also to Currituck Health and Rehab Center in Barco for their compassion to our unique situation.  We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to our loving family who regularly checked in on Val, providing meals, support, advice, and friendship. We love you all.

A Celebration of Life gathering was held in Deep Creek October 2019.  Gallop Funeral Services of Nags Head provided cremation services to the family.  Memorial donations may be made to Breast Cancer Research Foundation or any animal rescue charity of choice.
