Melissa G. Starkey

Melissa G. Starkey died unexpectedly Saturday February 7, 2009 in Paris, Tennessee. She was 37 years old.  Melissa was born September 6, 1971.  She was the loving wife of the late Don Slack, the beloved daughter of Gerald Starkey of Mobile, Alabama and Brenda Hicks Hejduk and husband Michael Hejduk of Chicahauk, Southern Shores, and the granddaughter of the late Sara Hicks of Smyrna, Georgia.

Melissa gracefully faced and overcame many challenges in her life. She was a published poet and loved music and spending time with her family.  Melissa was a special light and joy in the family and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Besides her parents, Melissa is survived by one sister, Jennifer Chiasson of Roper; two brothers Kory Hejduk and Jason Hejduk both of Southern Shores; her maternal grandfather Bill Hicks of Smyrna, Georgia; and a host of extended family members and cherished friends.

A memorial service will be held Monday February 23, 2009 at the Gallop Funeral Services Chapel in Nags Head at 10 O’clock in the morning. Father Tom Wilson will officiate. Interment will be private and in accordance with Melissa’s wishes.
