Mary Schumann
Mary Sutton Schumann passed away peacefully in her Buxton home on Thursday, April 27, 2023 after complications with chronic illness. She was 65.
Mary was born April 21, 1958 in Williamsburg, Virginia where she was raised with her siblings and went on to attend William and Mary University in pursuit of an English degree. Mary forged her career in various avenues of the customer service and hospitality industries and was devoted to each guest. A long time resident of Hatteras Island, Mary dedicated herself to raising her two daughters, Devon and Hannah. A former Cape Hatteras School PTA President, Girl Scout Troop Leader and Odyssey of the Mind Coach, Mary was passionate about empowering the minds of young people and encouraging them to harness their creativity. In addition to enjoying time with family and friends, she found pleasure tending to her garden, reading, spending time outside and doting on her late pup, Otis. Those who knew Mary personally would say she was hard working and kind, generous, strong-willed and loving. She had a flair for fun and a laugh that could be heard throughout the largest crowd.
Mary is survived by her husband Peter Schumann of Frisco; her two daughters, Devon and Hanna; and her siblings, Michael, Richard, Thomas and Margaret, and numerous other extended family members and friends.
A celebration of life service will be planned for later in the summer. Please share condolences with the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.

Dear Pete, Devon, and Hanna, Our hearts are saddened by Mary’s passing. May the Holy Spirit give those that are grieving a peace that surpasses our human understanding✨ Love & Smiles, Kathy & Russ
I just saw the notice of Mary passing today, May 2nd, while in the midst of a stay in Buxton. I had tried to call Mary a few days ago, at her work number, without sucess, to tell her we were going to be on the Island this week. I got to know Mary through OBR , and she was the only person I would talk to. I stayed in touch with Mary for years, through all of the seasons. First time on Hatteras since 2019, and we had planned on seeing Mary, as we always stopped to see her, whether using OBR or not. The switch to the new company made communicating more difficult. I was out of touch with her for a while. She had mentioned some health issues, but not a lot of details. She was a fine person. I will miss our conversations. My heart goes out to her family and friends. I won't forget her kindness to us ,over the years.
So sorry for your loss- Mary was a sweet, loving person, and I will miss her. RIP Mary
Mary has been our local friend for the past 30 years. Her Island knowledge and friendship will be missed. From her days with OBR through the transition with the new company she was always helpful. To her family Mary was a thoughtful and kind soul she will be missed. Andy
Even though we lost touch, Mary and Peter were good friends and fun memories. Very sad to hear.
Mary and I had many good times working together at the Pilot House and the Light Ship. She was a great friend and I have many wonderful memories of our time on the beach. Condolences to Peter and her girls.
