Mary Byrum Segars

January 6, 2026

Mary Byrum Segars, 73, of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, passed away peacefully in Kill Devil Hills, NC January 6, 2026. Born on February 16, 1952, in Hampton, Virginia, Mary lived a life filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and the countless children she taught throughout her career.

For many years, Mary served as a beloved lead teacher in the Play to Learn program at Grace United Methodist Church in Newport News, Virginia, where she touched the lives of generations of young students. Her creativity and genuine care turned her classroom into a sanctuary where children felt seen and encouraged, leaving a legacy that lives on in the many who are now adults.

Mary was the heart of every gathering, armed with a sharp wit and a kitchen that operated on the principle that ‘too much food’ was just enough. No one ever left her table hungry, and few left without a dose of her sought-after wisdom. Mary approached life with a creative spirit and an open heart. Her kindness, wisdom, and integrity made her a treasured friend and confidante to many.

She found joy in life’s simple pleasures: spending time with family and friends, sitting on her porch swing listening to the ocean waves, working on crafty and creative projects, and adding to her cherished collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia. Above all, Mary treasured the moments spent with those she loved most.

Mary is survived by her devoted husband, Bob Segars; her sons, Rusty Segars and his wife, Victoria, and Bobby Segars and his wife, Christina; her beloved grandchildren, Hunter and Emma Segars; and her brother, Tommy Byrum. She was preceded in death by her brother, Woody Byrum.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Grace United Methodist Church at 1209 Country Club Rd, Newport News, Virginia. Viewing will begin at 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral at 12:00 PM.  Interment will follow at 1:00 PM at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Boulevard in Newport News, VA..

Mary’s legacy of love, generosity, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.  Please share expressions of sympathy with the Segars family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com.  Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.
