  1. I will miss her alot .lots of time with Linda and sam .they are a beautiful couple super talented ❤️ rest in peace .

  2. Linda was one of the best people I’ve known; I will miss her the rest of my days. We became friends in the seventh grade at Lane Junior High in West Allis, Wisconsin, and graduated together from West Allis Central High School. Linda’s early years were not easy, but she and her mom were always positive, kind, and generous—and always fun to be around!
When Linda met Sam, her life certainly changed for the better, and I’ll forever be grateful to her new family for the love they brought to her life.

  3. I love you to the moon and back. I hope you found Grandpa among the stars. Thank you for…everything, GGML.

  4. I appreciated Linda’s leadership at DIA as well as her friendship upon her retirement in the OBX. She made an impact on my life. Condolences to her family and other friends. Her creativity and kindness will be missed.

  5. I want to say how much Linda’s generosity has & will affect many lives for a very long time. She gifted all her fabric & quilting accessories to the Outer Banks Blanketeers who make quilts for children & adults in need of a quilt hug. Her legacy & generosity will live on in the quilts that have been made with her fabric, the many lives they will touch & the quilting supplies that will continue to make quilts for years to come. Dear Linda, you will be missed in so many ways & in so many lives. God speed. Xoxo

  6. I knew Linda for a short time we has a lot in common. I enjoyed talking with her about quilting. And she has shared some of her knowledge with we. She shared with me all her art which is throughout her home. I will miss seeing her and talking to her on the phone..

  7. Loved every minute we spent talking, laughing and of course, shopping! I treasure the days spent with you both after we all left DIA. Still remiss over wonderful times. Love you much! Mary Anne

Linda Sue Gillette

March 2, 2025

Linda Sue Gillette of Southern Shores passed away on March 2, 2025. Linda was born in Oregon, IL on October 2, 1948. Early years were spent in Mt. Morris, IL later moving to Milwaukee, WI, graduating high school there in 1966. Her considerable artistic ability began to manifest in high school as she led various projects such as designing all the scenery for the musical play, The Sound of Music.

Linda entered the University of Wisconsin School of Fine Arts, completing her B.A. in Art with American University in 1974. She was a member of Mortar Board for academic achievement.

She spent seven years living in Germany as she worked for the Defense Intelligence Agency in their printing operation. Returning to the US, she continued her DIA career, receiving numerous awards as she rose to higher levels of management. Among these was the Directors Award for Exceptional Civilian Services in 1996. Linda earned her Masters of Science in Strategic Intelligence in 1994.   Upon retiring in 1998, she and her beloved husband, Sam, moved to Southern Shores, NC. Here she continued her love of art- painting many pictures, furniture and jewelry. She also painted all the wonderful carvings done by her husband Sam. Linda’s artwork was displayed throughout their home.

One of Linda’s greatest joys was being part of the Blanketeers, a quilting group. The group sewed quilts for those in need, for both adults and children. She was quite prolific and made a quilt a week in the winter months. One of her biggest efforts, done with Sam, was Hattie- a black and white horse in the Winged Horse Extravaganza in the Outer Banks. Her artwork sold in galleries across the area bringing smiles to many people over the years. Linda was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution(DAR).  It’s mission is to preserve American history, support veterans, and promote patriotism.

Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Sam and her mother, Judith Anne. She is survived by her first cousins, David Mongan (Lorna) of Aurora, IL; first cousin, Karen M. Mongan of Oregon, IL; and five stepchildren, Sam Gillette, Jr. of Arlington, VA, Ann Paquette of Grandy, NC, David Gillette of Gaithersburg, MD, Craig Gillette of Washington, DC, and John Gillette of Raleigh, NC; five step-grandchildren, one great-step grandchild, and numerous extended family members and friends. We extend our thanks to special helpers: Deb Helber and Eddie Matthews, Gayle Booth, Nadine Christian and Mindy Hunter.

Linda’s memorial service will be held at 12 noon March 15, 2025 at Gallop Funeral Chapel in Nags Head, NC. Friends may visit the family one-hour prior. Please leave a message of comfort at gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.
