Kenneth Smith, Sr.

Kenneth “Poppy” Smith Sr., 86, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, in Chesapeake, Virginia. Born on February 10, 1939, in Winsor, New York, Kenneth lived a full and vibrant life rooted in hard work, family devotion, and a deep love for the outdoors.
From an early age, Kenneth embraced the values of dedication and perseverance while growing up and working on a farm. These qualities carried through his entire life and career. He later worked at several beloved local establishments including Kelly’s, The Dunes, and Grits Grill – places where he not only worked in the kitchen and helped prepare food but also built lasting friendships with coworkers and patrons alike. Grits Grill held a special place in his heart; it became a cherished gathering spot for family breakfasts filled with laughter and fond memories.
Kenneth was known to many as “Poppy,” a name that captured the warmth and joy he brought into every room. He had an infectious smile and a generous spirit that touched countless lives. Whether it was lending a hand with yard work or fixing something around the house, Poppy was always ready to help anyone in need. His hands were rarely idle, he found joy in mowing lawns, weed eating, planting gardens, and caring for animals. He was truly happiest outdoors with dirt under his nails and sunshine on his face.
A man of many passions, Poppy loved bowling, fishing from the pontoon boat, playing horseshoes (where he rarely lost), and watching sports. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Dallas Cowboys, Duke basketball, NBA’s Golden State Warriors, and NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr. Sports were more than entertainment – they were moments shared with loved ones over spirited conversations and friendly rivalries.
Family meant everything to Kenneth. He lovingly cared for his wife Bonita “Bonnie” Smith until her passing – a testament to his unwavering loyalty and compassion. He is survived by his sister, Mary Jane Starks; brother, Frederick Smith; sons, Richard Darrow and Kenneth Smith along with Kenneth’s wife T Smith; grandchildren, Jamie, Jenell, Laurel, Little Ricky, Jennifer, Gary, Valerie and her husband Ross; Ethan and his wife Kailey; great-grandchildren, Mckaylobe, CJ, Felicity, Harmony, Melody, Evely, Zoey, Archie and many more beloved great and great grandchildren; his special nieces, Annette Page and Luann O’Neal; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Bonnie; son, Keith Johnson; parents, Walter and Eleanor Smith; brothers, Earl and Melvin Smith; sisters, May Smith, Myrtle Woodrow, Jean Keesler; and great-grandson Malachi Smith.
Kenneth’s legacy is one of strength wrapped in kindness – a man who gave all he had to those around him without hesitation. His wisdom came not just from years lived but from lessons learned through experience. He spoke honestly from the heart and lived each day with purpose.
We will forever cherish the time we had with this remarkable man whose presence brought comfort and joy to so many. May Poppy’s memory continues to inspire love, laughter, resilience, and perhaps a few unbeatable games of horseshoes for generations to come. A viewing will be held on Friday, August 22 from 6-8pm at Gallop Funeral Chapel at 6917 S. Croatan Highway in Nags Head. A Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 23, at 11:30 AM at Laurel Memorial Gardens, Macedonia Church Road Poplar Branch, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to ASPCA due to his love for animals. Please leave a message of comfort at gallopfunealservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.
