John Ochs

John Robert Ochs passed into the arms of his Lord Jesus February 21, 2025 in Virginia Beach, VA. He was 78 and preceded in death by his parents, Russell Ochs and Antonietta Rosiello Ochs, and his brother, Eddie Ochs.
John was born into a military family in Naples, Italy. He emigrated to America as a boy and spent his childhood in several states. In his youth, John loved long board surfing and worked as a life guard for the National Parks Service. Later, he would enlist in the United States Marine Corps and defend his country bravely and honorably in the jungles of Vietnam.
After his distinguished military service, John returned home to Hatteras Island to work in the family business- the Quarter Deck Restaurant. When he wasn’t at work, John was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also developed into a talented artist giving countless paintings to his friends all over the Outer Banks, to enjoy. John went on to serve the community through the Masonic Lodge #698 of Cape Hatteras and enjoyed attending church.
John Ochs will be remembered for his love of God, family, country, children, and animals. Left to cherish his memory in his loving wife of 57 years, Darlene Ochs of the Frisco residence, his sister-in-law, Juanita Ochs also of Frisco, his loyal friend, Norman Palmer of Grandy, NC, several cousins, his Marine Corps brothers, and countless friends.
Darlene is honoring John’s preference for cremation. A celebration of life will be held in the near future. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com .

John and Darlene are two of the best friends I have ever had…,for over 40 years. His wood carvings brought wood and paint to life as fish and fowl .He could paint and draw professionally with almost no effort. The stories and tales he could tell so well that I had the joy to be a part of so many of them.He was a good man that will be missed for so many reasons.I hope you are chasing drum as I write.Semper Fi Marine

john wasa wonderful person to meet. RIP.
I knew John since I moved here; Worked along side of him at Quarter deck; always so helpful and kind 👍
Feels like just yesterday I met John at 1/1’s marine corps reunion in Virginia. I fondly remember sipping shine with him, shucking oysters, and listening to his stories. One of my favorite memories was going to visit John and Darlene fresh out of boot. Driving down the beach with him and the boys, while John taught us a few select Marine Corps hymns. Darlene making us all feel at home like family. 30+ age years difference between us but it made no difference. I’m so glad I had the chance to know him.
God received another angel he will be missed. Loved to hear him tell his jokes and see his smiling face. May God give the family peace and comfort during this time. RIP John Your family is in my thoughts and prayers
God called another angel home that left a void in our heart here on earth. We will treasure your memory till we meet again.
Darlean, we remember John as compassionate, kind and a brother in Christ. You are on our prayers.

Darlene - My sincere condolences. Growing up with and attending school with John is a very wonderful memory that I cherish.
So sad to hear this news. My heart goes out to Darlene and family. John was one of my favorites. A true Patriot. I had the pleasure of introducing John to my son at Wayland's funeral last year, and in typical John fashion, he jumped right into a story that had us all laughing. When my family would visit, we had to go to the Quarter Deck for a hot fudge cake and stories with John. He will be missed by many.
So sorry for your loss! Thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
Lana and family, I am so sorry for your loss. John will always hold a special place in my heart and I am honored to have been gifted one of his special paintings. Thinking of you all.
