Harry Irwin Herman

December 19, 2010

Swan Quarter – Harry Irwin Herman passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at Cross Creek Health Care Center in Swan Quarter, NC. Son of the late Charles and Margaret Hampsay Herman, Harry was born April 5, 1926 in Pittsburgh, PA and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Besides being a devoted husband and loving father, Harry was a Merchant Marine who served his country honestly and faithfully during World War II.

Harry held a certificate with the State of Florida as a Licensed Pest Control Operator and retired from The Rollins Corporation after twenty years. He was also a member of the American Legion, Loyal Order of Moose and Roseland United Methodist Church of Sebastian, Florida.

Harry and his wife Olive Shelton Herman, who survives him, were married in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in March of 1954 and lived in the Sunshine State until March of 2007. For the past several years Harry has resided in Kill Devil Hills, NC where he received care and support with the mental and physical decline of a vascular dementia believed by his physicians to have an Alzheimer’s component. Though his days of bowling, golfing, reading, enjoying baseball and NASCAR had been gone for many years due to deafness, macular degeneration and dementia, he improved and found joy during the time he was able to participate in The GEM Center. Thank you, Gail and Angelo Sonnesso for a program that provided a quality service for both our family and our father . . . and thank you to our friend Rita Carson for making it possible for Harry to participate.

The family also extends special thanks to Visiting Angels of Northeastern Carolina, the staff of Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Kill Devil Hills, and most especially for the special care that was offered to Harry at Cross Creek Health Care Center in Swan Quarter, during his final days in the earthly body.

At peace and released, we will miss you Harry Herman, “a truly good man.”

Along with his wife Olive, Harry is survived by his sons, Richard Denton Herman and his wife Holly and their daughters Kelly Anne and Jenna Lynn of West Palm Beach, FL; Robert Adolphus Wilkerson and his wife Pamela and their son Dain Robert of Weston FL; daughter, Victoria Anne Toms and her husband Samuel of Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Harry’s brother John Samuel Herman of Mico, FL also survives him. Harry was preceded in death by his grandson Richard Frank Herman and his beloved sister, Edna Herman Hurley.

Plans for a memorial service wait until the family can be together in Florida. Condolences to the family may be expressed via the on-line register at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.
