Frederick Otto Dietzel, III

Southern Shores – Frederick Otto Dietzel, III, age 77, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on Wednesday, August, 13, 2014 in Nags Head, NC after a lengthy illness. Fred is survived by his wife, Bernice of Southern Shores, his daughter, Sharon (Andy) Cichocki of Valley Forge, PA; son Robert (Kerry) Dietzel of Doylestown, PA; and six granddaughters, Lauren and Lindsey Cichocki, Brynn, Devon, Courtney and Kasey Dietzel. He is also survived by his sister, Arlene (Terry) Wilhelm of East Petersburg, PA, and brother Richard Dietzel of Sulfur, OK. Fred is survived by many other loving relatives and friends including seven nieces and nephews and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dr. Arthur and Jean Anne Holder.

Fred was born on March 12, 1937 in Jersey City, NJ. A superior athlete in high school, he attended Albright College on a full athletic scholarship to play basketball. He played baseball and basketball while at Albright and is still one of the all-time career point leaders for Albright. He was named Albright Athlete of the Year and was his Senior Class President in 1959. Upon graduating from Albright, Fred earned his master’s degree at Springfield College in Springfield MA, and then studied at Indiana State College earning education administration credits. Fred taught history at Wilbraham College, Sparta High School and was head of the history department at Hatboro Horsham High School. During his tenure at Hatboro Horsham High School he was a highly successful head coach of the basketball team. Fred went on to become Vice Principal at Central Bucks East High School in Doylestown, PA and ended his career as Principal of Upper Perkiomen High School in Pennsburg, PA. Recently Fred was inducted into the Ephrata High School Athletic Hall of Fame and Albright College Athletic Hall of Fame. He enjoyed his retirement in the Outer Banks while spending his time fishing, boating, and golfing.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20 at Duck United Methodist Church, 1214 Duck Rd., Duck, NC. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the reception at Duck Woods Country Club immediately following the service.
