Florence Ackerman

Florence Ackerman died peacefully on July 10, 2007 in her Kitty Hawk home, surrounded by her family and dearly-loved dog, Spirit.  Flo, as she was known to all who loved her, was eighty four years young at the time of her death.

Born in St. Paul, MN, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Adrienne Shepherd.  Flo was a dedicated homemaker and mother who, after raising two children, became a real estate broker.  A long time resident of Normandy Beach, NJ, Flo moved to the Outer Banks in the late 1980s, following the death of her beloved husband, Frank Ackerman.  In her later years, she started painting in watercolor and became an artist of local note, volunteering as a member of the Dare County Arts Council.

In addition to friends around the world, Flo is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancey and Bill Veldran of Charles Town, WV; her son and daughter in-law, Frank “Buzz” and Mary Ackerman of Kitty Hawk; and her grandson, Max Ackerman, also of Kitty Hawk.  She is also survived on a brother, Walter Shepherd of Cicero, IN.

A celebration of Flo’s life is planned for a later date.
