Christine Buckner
Christine Buckner died peacefully in her home on November 2, 2024 after a short illness. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 26, 1948 and grew up in Washington, DC. After attending Sullins Junior College in Bristol Virginia, she went on to obtain her journalism degree from American University. Christine was hired as the first female property manager at Weaver Brothers Inc. It was there that she met her partner, Annette. They eventually spent eight months traveling across the country in a camper-van before buying a house and settling down in Kitty Hawk. They worked a variety of jobs before starting Grass Roots, their lawn care business which they owned for 25 years.
Christine took an active role in the community, serving in Kitty Hawk as Chairwoman of the Recreation Committee and being on the Heritage Day Committee and the Board of Adjustments. She was most proud of being instrumental in establishing and serving as Manager of the Kitty Hawk Community Garden.
Christine had an inquiring mind. She always wanted to know more about her wide range of interests, which included history, art, birds, gardening and cooking. Her guiding principle was always “question everything”. Her sense of humor and connection to the people who knew her will be sorely missed.
Christine is survived by her partner of 41 years Annette Regala; sister-in-law Anne Riffey-Buckner; nieces Teresa Buckner and Susan Buckner and nephews Michael Buckner and Jeffrey Burr; cousins Jane Quetin; Langdon Quetin and Annie Stafford. Also, friends who were very dear to her – Margie, Karen and Jackie….and Zena Cat. She was predeceased by her father Colonel Jean Hugo Buckner, USMC retired; mother Helen Frances Nelson Buckner and brother Lieutenant Colonel David Nelson Buckner, USMC retired. She will be greeted at the rainbow bridge by her beloved dogs Amelia, Adam, Miss Maple and Paco.
A private memorial service will be arranged. In lieu of flowers, a contribution could be made to Best Friends Animal Society, Kanab UT., or your local SPCA. Please leave a message of hope at gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.
Condolences
I met and enjoyed Christine when she was at Barco when my mom was there. I have many great memories of her. Her personality was so uplifting.
Oh Annette, I have so many regrets that I didn't get together one more time. What a lady, what a character. She was the question lady. She was the animal advocate. She was your soul mate. There will never be another. I love you both. So glad I had her on my life's journey.
Christine - I'm so sorry that we only had four years to know one another since I introduced myself to you, but they were wonderful years and I treasure our friendship and the phone calls where we talked about everything under the sun. Say Hello to Mother for me!
Annette, I was shattered when I heard about Christine's sudden passing. When I think of you two, I think first of laughter and our long and hilarious lunches, and then of your love for each other and for your precious animals. You and Christine made us all better. Big John and I send you our love.
So sorry for your loss. Many thoughts and prayers. Darlene
