Burwell O. “Buck” Buchanan
Kill Devil Hills- Burwell O. “Buck” Buchanan, age 92 of Kill Devil Hills, NC passed away peacefully in his residence on April 15th, 2012. Loving husband of the late Marie (nee Kummer); brother of the late Richard and Audrey (Powers), father of Judy (Jim Parker) of Philadelphia, PA and Richard (Viviane) of Fairview Park, OH and proud grandfather of Andrew, Lucy, Taryn and Catherine. Born in Norfolk, VA, the family moved to Brooklyn, NY when Buck was 12. He served in the Army Air Corps in WWII as a C-47 pilot in the 79th Troop Carrier Squadron of the 436th Troop Carrier Group and also participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. After the war he settled in Cleveland, OH and spent several years as a teacher and counselor at Fairview High School.
His next career was as an inspector for the U.S. Immigration Service from which he retired in 1983. In retirement he became an accomplished painter of beach scenes, light houses and portraitures inspired by the beautiful surroundings of the Outer Banks. He will be remembered for his kind, gentle and loving spirit.
The family will receive friends at the Gallop Funeral Services Chapel 6917 S. Croatan Highway MP 16 in Nags Head Wednesday, April 18th from 4-7 P.M. A service of remembrance will begin at 5:30 P.M.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org or the Dare County Library in Kill Devil Hills www.earlibrary.org/killdevilhills An inurnment service with military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
