Bobby Lee Phelps, Sr.

BUXTON – Bobby Lee Phelps, Sr. peacefully passed from his earthly home on November 28, 2023, at the age of 87 years.

Bobby was born in Norfolk, Virginia and had ties to Buxton for several decades through his parents, longtime residents on the island. Family time was spent surfcasting on the point and bumping along the beach in Pop Pops old jeep. He built and moved permanently to his home on Dippin Vat Road in 2005. He loved the water and volunteered with the Coast Guard Axillary until his retirement this year.

His early adult life was spent in Norfolk and Chesapeake, Virginia where he worked and retired from the Virginian Pilot/Ledger Star as a mailer-machinist. Following retirement, he worked for Quikrete Cement as a maintenance supervisor until the early 90’s.

Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil T. Phelps and Arelia Driscoll and stepfather Page Driscoll; his daughter, Karen Lynn White; and three siblings, Francis Ward, Allen Thomas Phelps, and Cecil L. Phelps. He is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Ann Linville and Katherine Marie Newnam (Thomas); his son, Bobby Lee Phelps, Jr, (Victoria); and the love of his life, Mary Edith Phelps. Other survivors that enriched his life include seven grandchildren, Cory Tipton, Jenifer Weissman, Kelly Batt, Ryan Linville, Jessica Stephenson, Jamie Phelps, Amanda Miller and thirteen great-grandchildren.
