The only seafood I have ever enjoyed was crab she prepared for neighbors. I showed up without notice and she graciously invited me to join. Thinking of you at this time💕

  18. I worked with Martha at Walmart and I thought she was a wonderful example of a Southern lady, both in personality and her cooking ! Martha was a true friend to me during my time working there and after I left in 1997. I’ll never forget the delicious lunch that she served me, saying it was leftovers, my stomach and spirit were totally grateful for the friendship she bestowed upon me. Martha was a keen judge of people and wasn’t afraid to speak out if she saw poor judgment in situations. I valued her friendship.

Martha Chappell Helms

Martha Chappell Helms or “Kaye” as she was lovingly known, passed away August 4, 2025 in Moyock, NC where she was a popular resident at the Currituck House.  Martha Kaye was preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Betty Chappell as well as her beloved husband Jack Helms; her sister, Leona; her three brothers Joe, Earson, and Sam; and her son-in-law, Mike Price.

Martha Kaye was born in Hertford, NC and moved to Currituck as a child. She graduated from Dr. W.T. Griggs School. Eventually, Martha Kaye and Jack opened and successfully ran Helms Grocery in Jarvisburg, NC for over 20 years. Mary Kaye’s claim to fame was her love of family and her cooking.  Everyone was welcome in her home and she fed them well.

Martha Kaye is survived by two daughters, Sharon Price (Lee) of Jarvisburg; Jackie Price of Duncan’s Creek, NC; one son, Frank Helms and beloved daughter-in-law Brenda-also of Jarvisburg; six grandchildren Megan, Chris, Jack; Josh, Hollie, and Hillary six great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Martha Kaye was the best Mama and Nanny ever!

The memorial service will be held Thursday August 7, 2025 at 11 am at Poplar Branch Baptist Church.  Pastor David Wallace will officiate.  Please share a message of comfort at gallopfuneralservices.com.  Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.
