Virginia Ellen Swain

Virginia Ellen Swain, 72, of Kill Devil Hills, NC passed away on February 14, 2025 at home surrounded by family after a lengthy illness. Ellen was born in Richmond, VA but spent the majority of her life on Swains Lane in Barco, NC.
Ellen was a homemaker, and an avid gardener- especially her roses, and an excellent cook. She will be remembered most by her family for her unmatched Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas punch, and delicious recipes that will be passed down for generations to come.
Ellen leaves behind her beloved bird, Pepper; her children, Tom Slaughter (Mary) of Mechanicsville, VA, Deborah Swain of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Tim Swain (Stephanie) of Grandy, NC; and nine grandchildren, Jackson, Thomas, James, AJ, Asheley, Kristin, Allison, Ashley, and Travis. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Swain, her children Les and Cindy, and grandchildren Ricky and Shelby. Ellen’s preference for cremation will be honored. Due to the recent loss of their sister and now their mother, the children will be having a private memorial at a future date.
The family wishes to thank the oncology nurses on 2 South at Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital and Albemarle Hospice for their excellent care of Ellen. The family gratefully suggests making memorial donations to a charity of your choosing. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.
