Dora B. Newbern
Dora Butts Newbern, 84, of Powells Point, NC passed away peacefully at home on April 4, 2024. Dora was born in Halifax County on November 30, 1939 to the late Marvin A. Butts Sr. and Irene Arrington Butts. She was a member of Hebron Methodist Church in Jarvisburg NC.
Dora met her husband of 58 years, William Norman Newbern, Jr at Louisburg College in 1959. She retired after 30 years of service, acting as the Powells Point Postmaster where she greeted everyone with a smile and piece of gum. After retirement, she spent her days in the garden and refilling all the many bird feeders throughout her yard.
Dora was preceded in death by her husband, William Norman Newbern, Jr.; son, William Norman Newbern, III; grandson, Bryan Norman Newbern; and brother, Marvin A. Butts Jr.
She leaves behind her son, Jeffrey Newbern Sr. (Jill), of Harbinger; sister, Ann B. Goodwin of Knightdale; grandchildren, Jeffrey Newbern Jr. (Alice) of Harbinger, Robyn Patterson (Shane) of Kitty Hawk, Danielle Guthrie (Lee) of Harbinger, Ryan Newbern (Meggan) of Powells Point, Ashley Credle (Johnny) of Jarvisburg, Haley Newbern (Josh) of Harbinger, and Jacob Newbern (Helen) of Kitty Hawk. Dora is also survived by 12 great grandchildren: Camden, Gabriella, Holly, Addison, Chandler, Noah, Ainsley, Tarren, Olivia, Summer, Kyler, and Lynlee.
Mrs. Newbern’s viewing will be held at Hebron United Methodist Church in Jarvisburg Monday, April 8, 2024 from 6 pm to 8 pm. The graveside funeral and committal will be held Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 1 pm at Newbern Family Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Ken “Rob” Robinson will officiate.

I’m so sorry to hear this sad news. Ms. Dora was always smiling and laughing and enjoy just talking when she worked at Powells Point Post Office. Prayers for you Jeff and the whole family. Your mom was a special lady with a heart of gold.

I loved Dora and will always cherish the good times we had singing in the choir at Hebron. This was back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, but I’ll never forget how much I enjoyed getting to know her and listening to her beautiful soprano voice. Dora made me feel so welcome with her smile and warm personality. May God be with you all and give you peace.

Glad I stopped by last weekend and chatted some with Mrs Dora. She remembered me and even watching two episodes of Andy Griffin last time I visited her at Jeff's house. Rest in Peace. Miss being in Church with you and Norman, Jr. And Jeff. Love Always Rob

Always greeting you as you opened the Post Office door with a smile. Ms. Dora was a great Postmaster, willing to help anyone that needed help. I remember meeting Dora at the post office when I first moved here in 1980. She was such a sweet woman and always helpful. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time.
