  4. I loved Dora and will always cherish the good times we had singing in the choir at Hebron. This was back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, but I’ll never forget how much I enjoyed getting to know her and listening to her beautiful soprano voice. Dora made me feel so welcome with her smile and warm personality.

Dora B. Newbern

April 4, 2024

Dora Butts Newbern, 84, of Powells Point, NC passed away peacefully at home on April 4, 2024. Dora was born in Halifax County on November 30, 1939 to the late Marvin A. Butts Sr. and Irene Arrington Butts. She was a member of Hebron Methodist Church in Jarvisburg NC.

Dora met her husband of 58 years, William Norman Newbern, Jr at Louisburg College in 1959. She retired after 30 years of service, acting as the Powells Point Postmaster where she greeted everyone with a smile and piece of gum. After retirement, she spent her days in the garden and refilling all the many bird feeders throughout her yard.

Dora was preceded in death by her husband, William Norman Newbern, Jr.; son, William Norman Newbern, III; grandson, Bryan Norman Newbern; and brother, Marvin A. Butts Jr.

She leaves behind her son, Jeffrey Newbern Sr. (Jill), of Harbinger; sister, Ann B. Goodwin of Knightdale; grandchildren, Jeffrey Newbern Jr. (Alice) of Harbinger, Robyn Patterson (Shane) of Kitty Hawk, Danielle Guthrie (Lee) of Harbinger, Ryan Newbern (Meggan) of Powells Point, Ashley Credle (Johnny) of Jarvisburg, Haley Newbern (Josh) of Harbinger, and Jacob Newbern (Helen) of Kitty Hawk. Dora is also survived by 12 great grandchildren: Camden, Gabriella, Holly, Addison, Chandler, Noah, Ainsley, Tarren, Olivia, Summer, Kyler, and Lynlee.

Mrs. Newbern’s viewing will be held at Hebron United Methodist Church in Jarvisburg Monday, April 8, 2024 from 6 pm to 8 pm. The graveside funeral and committal will be held Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 1 pm at Newbern Family Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Ken “Rob” Robinson will officiate.
