  1. My heart is breaking. She was one of my patients at Dr Heyder’s. Rendy was the strongest person I have ever met. Always looking up and never down and out. She’ll be missed and I share your sorrow. Thinking of the family as well as sweet Rendy!!! Prayers

  2. Robert, all of us in Sanderling are so sorry for your loss. I never met Rendy, but I know from our numerous conversations that she and your family meant the world to you. And even though I did not have the privilege of meeting her, I did have the honor of enjoying her famous Christmas candy that she made each year for all her friends. May God bless her and your family.

  3. Rendy was such an amazing woman. I am so glad to have been able to have cared for her all these years at the clinic. I will truly miss her. I will never forget her.

Rendy Gatlin Piland

September 19, 2023

Rendy Gatlin Piland, 64, of Point Harbor, NC passed away peacefully on September 19, 2023. Rendy was born in Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC on June 28, 1959 and grew up and lived most of her life in Northeastern North Carolina. Rendy worked as a housekeeper on the Outer Banks, fulfilled a life-long dream of owning a restaurant, and then became a Dialysis warrior and model peer support and advocate to her fellow dialysis center patients.

It’s unsure which was bigger, Rendy’s heart, personality, or her strength. Her selflessness had no limits, constantly putting family, friends, and even complete strangers before herself, doing anything she could to help someone in need. She devoutly looked after her family, friends and furkids; although she only had one child, she was a mom to many. A self-proclaimed pirate and leftover hippy, Rendy loved the beach, shell-collecting, sunrise watching, gardening, and good music. Her true passion, however, was eating and cooking good food. Nothing made her happier than to serve a home cooked meal and to watch others enjoy it. During the holidays, you could never find anyone more filled with the holiday spirit, donning Grinch pajamas the entire month of December and spreading holiday cheer, usually in the form of baked goods and presents. During her battle with kidney disease, in 2014 she began receiving dialysis treatments at the Davita Dialysis Center in Elizabeth City. She adored her dialysis technicians and nurses and encouraged other patients that were struggling with dialysis to continue treatments. Despite countless medical setbacks and hardships, her strength and positive outlook was unwavering and admired by many.

Rendy is survived by her husband, Robert Arnold Piland; her daughter, Lelia Michelle Boyce; and her rat terrier, Zippy.

Memorial and Celebration of life services are to be determined, family and friends will be notified when arrangements are made. Rendy will be posthumously attending the annual Blackbeard’s Pirate Jamboree with immediate family in Ocracoke where she will become a part of the island she loved so much. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Kidney Foundation in her honor. Please share condolences at gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.
