Roger William “Bill” LaFountaine

November 29, 2014

Kill Devil Hills – Roger William “Bill” LaFountaine, 84, of Kill Devil Hills, died peacefully on Saturday, November 29, 2014 after a brief illness. He was born on April 7, 1930 to the late Genevieve Lenoir and Harry LaFountaine in Philadelphia Pa., where he spent his childhood and met the love of his life, his wife Anna G. “Bananas” LaFountaine. They married in 1950 and spent 41 happy years together until her death in 1991. Bill joined the Navy in 1947, and spent 5 years serving his country honorably after which he joined the Merchant Marines for a short time. He then worked as a brick mason under the careful tutelage of his father-in-law, and friend Guiseppe “Poppy Joe” Cimini. Bill was a member of the Teamsters Union, where he retired as a truck driver in 1981. He then took a job at LaSalle High School as a maintenance man. It was at LaSalle that Bill found his true calling. He loved the kids, and forged many lasting friendships. He was an honorary assistant football coach, and even though he only had a 10th grade education, was elected “Educator of the Year” in 1985.

After the death of his one true love, Anna, Bill moved to Kill Devil Hills. It didn’t take him long to slip into the laid back lifestyle on the Outer Banks. Bill loved to fish, and spent many happy hours on Kitty Hawk Pier. He was a joy to be around, and when asked how he was, chances are he would answer “Wonderful!” Bill loved music, old movies, especially westerns, and still cried every time he watched “Rudy”. He truly was a member of the “greatest generation”, and will be sorely missed by many.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, his granddaughter Dana LaFountaine, daughter-in-law Nancy C. LaFountaine and brother Bud Hall. He leaves behind sons, Joe LaFountaine (Kim) of Kill Devil Hills: Mark “Butch” LaFountaine (Lucy) of Kitty Hawk: Roger LaFountaine,of Browns Mills, NJ, grandchildren, Joey and Will LaFountaine: Billy and Kenny LaFountaine: great grandson, Tyler Applegate: brother Bobby Hall and many nieces and nephews, to include Patty Malloy (Sam) with whom he shared a very special relationship.

Honoring his wishes, family and friends are invited to a viewing at the Gallop Funeral Services chapel, Nags Head Tuesday, December 2, 2014 from 6 to 8 pm. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com
