Katherine Marie Ray

Manteo- Katherine Marie Ray, 62 died unexpectedly at home Monday February 7, 2011. Kathy, as she was known by family and friends, was the daughter of the late Howard and Martha Makela. She was born in Montour Falls, New York.

Kathy completed her high school studies in New York and went on to earn her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in education from State University of New York SUNY Cortland. From there she embarked on a long and successful career as a teacher in both the Greenville, South Carolina and New Field, New York school systems.

After retiring from teaching, Kathy acted on her dream to own a business and opened Stripers restaurant in Manteo. Through her vision and determination, she built the restaurant into the popular local destination it remains today. Countless, customers, colleagues, and co-workers will dearly miss her unique presence.

Kathy Ray is survived by her two sisters, Debby M. Mickelson and husband Jim of Pelzer, South Carolina and Bonnie Makela of Mystic, Connecticut; one brother Robert J. “RJ” Makela of Lorraine, NY; several extended family members, and numerous cherished friends.

In accordance with Kathy’s wishes, the family will hold a private service of remembrance at a future date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial tributes be forwarded to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.
